It may have come down to a controversial penalty call in the final seconds, but Florida State came through with a big 31-27 win over Notre Dame in a game between the number two and number five teams in the nation. It was close and maybe with a little bit of luck but at least for this week, it should give the Seminoles enough credit to sit on top of the rankings once again.

C.J. Prosise did something a lot of receivers do every game. He also made the illegal block within five yards of the scrimmage line, which makes it OK. But he kept on doing it, pushing the Florida State cornerback well into the endzone, and in terms of legality, it was the right call. But when it comes to consistency from the referees? Or having a game decided by a flag on a play that’s ignored so many times? That felt a little bit off.

The funny thing about that play, done with 13 seconds left in the game which would have given Notre Dame a two or three point lead and barely any time to blow it, was that even without the block, Corey Robinson would have been open to make that reception. It was a huge day for the 6’5 sophomore out of San Antonio, with his father, David Robinson, a two-time NBA champion and one time MVP, watching from the sidelines, finishing with 8 receptions for 99 yards and a couple of touchdowns.

It was a big day for Jameis Winston as well. Despite throwing an awful interception and struggling all through the first half against the Notre Dame pass rush, especially when it wasn’t extra pressure coming at him. But in the second half? He was 15-of-16 for 181 yards and a touchdown throw. He did very well all game long against the blitz, throwing both of his touchdown passes against five or more players on the pass rush. No one in college football has thrown as many touchdowns as him (26) against extra pressure since the beginning of last season.

Everett Golson continues to make too many mistakes. He makes some great plays, finishing the game with 313 passing yards, three touchdowns and running for 33 yards as well. But he was intercepted twice, carrying on with the trend of the last few games after not throwing a single interception in the first three games of the season. He also struggled making the deep pass all game long, completing only 5-of-16 on throws travelling more than 10 yards.

Florida State continue to show they aren’t the team of last year. They trailed for almost the entire game, including half time, having to come back from behind five times. They were outgained by 147 yards. It was already the fourth time this season allowing over 400 yards, something that happened just once last year. It was also the third time in five games that the Semionles were behind at half time, something that happened just once last year.

And with all of the difficulties, they’re still undefeated at 7-0, and with a good chance of claiming the top spot again, at least for on more week. Jameis Winston has now won his first 20 games as a starter for Florida State, setting a new record in the FBS, while Florida State have won 23 consecutive games dating back to the 2012 season. It might be a bit soon to talk about dynasty, but if this streak keeps on going and ends with another national title, it won’t be too far fetched to put them in the discussion.
