Match Highlights – Manchester United vs Chelsea

The injury time goal from Robin van Persie might be one of the more important ones we’ll see this season, denying Chelsea a chance to escape even further in the top of the Premier League, as Manchester United salvage a 1-1 draw after falling behind due to a Didier Drogba goal.

Both goals came from set pieces. The first, for Chelsea, came in the 53rd minute. After pretty dull and even first half between the two teams, a Cesc Fabregas corner kick met a rising Drogba to score while a short and helpless Rafael was left covering him. Robin van Persie, standing on the goalline, tried to nudge the ball away with his head, but it was too powerful.

Chelsea looked like the better team as United struggled creating chances until the 75th minute. From there, Jose Mourinho once again fell back and decided to hold on to the lead. Just like he did as Chelsea lost a one goal lead against Manchester City. Four points lost this season for Chelsea, all four of them in the same city after already leading.

Branislav Ivanovic got booked for a second time in the 92nd minute for a foul on Angel di Maria. He argued, but there really wasn’t anything to argue about. Di Maria took the kick from the left wing. Maroune Fellaini, stringing together two good matches in a row for the first time on his current team, sent a powerful header to the center of the goal, saved by Courtois. On the rebound, Robin van Persie was quickest, kicking it powerfully in and making sure no loss occurs this time.

Chelsea shouldn’t be too worried. They have a four point lead over the surprising Southampton and a six point lead over Manchester City. They’re still firmly in control of this league, and have yet to be truly outplayed by anyone this season.

For Manchester United, this was a big morale boost, nothing more. The race for a Champions League wouldn’t have escaped them in any case with such a tight table at the moment. However, considering how badly things seem to turn out for them this season, an injury time equalizer from a player who many are calling washed up just might be what the doctor ordered.
