Champions League – Group Stage Qualifying Scenarios

Champions League – Group Stage Qualifying Scenarios

Champions League

We have two more days of Champions League group stage left this season, and with it come the calculations of who can qualify from what group. Five spots are still up for grabs, with Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, Leverkusen, Dortmund, Arsenal, Bayern Munich, PSG, Barcelona, Chelsea, Sporting and Shakhtar Donetsk securing their spot in the next round.

Group A: Atletico Madrid have already qualified, and will finish first with one more point. Juventus are second, three points ahead of Olympiacos, but are losing in the head to head: Juventus won 3-2 in Turin but lost 1-0 in Greece, giving Olympiakos the away goal go-ahead. So how can Olympiacos qualify? If Atletico Madrid win in Italy. Juventus only need a draw to qualify. They can finish first if they win by at least two goals. They’re out if they lose and Olympiakos win against Malmo in Greece.

Spain Atlético Madrid 5 4 0 1 14 3 +11 12
Italy Juventus 5 3 0 2 7 4 +3 9
Greece Olympiacos 5 2 0 3 6 11 −5 6
Sweden Malmö FF 5 1 0 4 2 11 −9 3

Group B: Real Madrid are through, finishing first. That leaves one spot for Basel (leading with six points), Liverpool (4 points) and Ludogorets (also 4 points) to fight over. Real Madrid host the Bulgarian champions. Anything but a win for the European champions will be a huge shock. Elsewhere, in Anfield, will be the more interesting encounter. It’s quite simple: Liverpool have to win in order to qualify from second place, Basel can afford a draw, but not a loss.

Spain Real Madrid 5 5 0 0 12 2 +10 15
Switzerland Basel 5 2 0 3 6 7 −1 6
England Liverpool 5 1 1 3 4 8 −4 4
Bulgaria Ludogorets Razgrad 5 1 1 3 5 10 −5 4

Group C: Two teams still fighting for the top two spots. Leverkusen playing in Benfica, who have nothing to play for; Monaco hosting Zenit. Leverkusen will qualify, but only a win will clinch them the top spot. Monaco can qualify with a draw at Zenit, while a win for the Russians takes them through.

Russia Zenit Saint Petersburg 5 2 1 2 4 4 0 7
Portugal Benfica 5 1 1 3 2 6 −4 4

Group D: Dortmund and Arsenal have both qualified already. The only way Dortmund don’t finish first is if they lose at home to Anderlecht and Arsenal win in Turkey against Galatasaray, who can’t even make it to third, earning just one point in five matches.

Turkey Galatasaray 5 0 1 4 3 15 −12 1

Group E: Very interesting. Bayern Munich are through from first, no matter what. Roma, CSKA Moscow and Manchester City are all with five points. Bayern play their meaningless match at home against CSKA Moscow. Roma host Manchester City. CSKA Moscow will only qualify if they win and Roma doesn’t. Manchester City can only qualify if they win and CSKA Moscow don’t win in Munich. Roma will qualify if they win, or if they draw and CSKA Moscow don’t win in Munich.

Group F: Head to head for the top spot: Barcelona hosting PSG. Anything but a Barcelona win puts PSG through first place into the round of 16.
