Oldest NBA Players With a Triple Double

Oldest NBA Players With a Triple Double

Early on in the 2014-2015 NBA Season, we’ve seen two dinosaurs of the game record triple doubles, something you don’t really expect from old and falling apart players. However, Tim Duncan and Kobe Bryant are special, putting themselves among a select few to get that 10-10-10 mark (or better) past the age of 36, joining the likes of Karl Malone, Magic Johnson and Jason Kidd among others.

Vlade Divac – 36 Years and 14 Days

Vlade Divac

Divac had eight triple doubles during his NBA career, the last of them coming shortly after his 36th birthday during the 2003-2004 NBA season. He scored 14 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had 11 assists in a 127-111 win for the Sacramento Kings, maybe the best of the 00’s team to miss out on the NBA finals, beating the Boston Celtics.

Kobe Bryant – 36 Years and 99 Days

Kobe Bryant

Bryant picked up his 20th career triple double in a season he seems to be all about personal glory and statistics, mostly gunning after the all-time scoring record. For now he’ll have to settle for getting past Michael Jordan, while Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wait a bit further up the ladder. Bryant scored 31 points with 11 rebounds and 12 assists to lead the Lakers against the Raptors, a rare win for them these days, beating Toronto 129-122.

Magic Johnson – 36 Years and 184 Days

Magic

The Magic Johnson comeback in 1996 didn’t lift the Lakers to new heights, but did show what the game was missing for almost five years, as he averaged 14.6 points, 6.9 assists and 5.7 rebounds in his new role as a power forward. It was his first triple double since April 1991. He scored 15 points to go with 10 rebounds and 13 assists, helping the Lakers beat the Hawks 87-86.

Mark Jackson – 36 Years and 325 Days

Mark Jackson

Jackson spent his five first NBA seasons with the Knicks and after a decade-long tour with the Pacers, Clippers and Raptors, he landed back in the Big Apple for just one season. In a four point loss to a terrible Bulls team (the Knicks were slightly less terrible that year), Jackson scored 15 points to go with 10 rebounds and 13 assists.

Charles Oakley – 36 Years and 329 Days

Charles Oakley

Another former Knicks player, Oakley got his final career triple double when playing for the Raptors during the 2000-01 season. In a 98-75 win over the Chicago Bulls (Oakley and Jackson were teammates on that Raptors team), Oakley grabbed 11 rebounds to go with 10 points and a shocking 12 assists (2.5 per game for his career) to get the TD. He stayed in the league until the 2003-04 season.

Jason Kidd – 37 Years and 343 Days

Jason Kidd

Jason Kidd has 107 career triple doubles, third on the all-time list behind Magic and Oscar Robertson. Of the 12 triple double games by players over the age of 36, Kidd has five of them. He was still in fine form during the 2010-11 season, ending with an NBA championship for him and the Mavs. He got his last triple double on March 2011, as the Mavericks beat the 76ers 101-93. He 13 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds in that game.

Tim Duncan – 38 Years and 224 Days

Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan ended a four-year triple double drought on December 5, 2014, with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the Spurs beat the Memphis Grizzlies, making it his fourth career triple double in the regular season.

Karl Malone – 40 Years and 127 Days

Karl Malone

Karl Malone spent his first 18 NBA seasons with the Utah Jazz. His last one was a desperate attempt at a title ring that ended with a loss to the Detroit Pistons in the NBA finals. At the age of 40 and no longer the first or second option on the offense, Malone averaged 13.2 points, 8.7 rebounds and 3.9 assists on 32.7 minutes a night. Against the Spurs (November 28, 2003) Malone scored 10 points with 11 rebounds and 10 assists to get his final triple double. The Lakers won 103-87.
