Gary Kubiak

After one season as the offensive coordinator of the Baltimore Ravens, Gary Kubiak is once again a head coach of an NFL team, taking over the Denver Broncos from the fired John Fox, signing a four year deal.

Kubiak was part of a coaching staff that led the Ravens to the playoffs out of the tough AFC North, winning the wild card game against the Steelers but narrowly losing to the Patriots in the divisional round. Even before the Broncos position became available, Kubiak’s name was mentioned in connection to other positions but he kept shooting offers and rumors down, suggesting he’s staying in Baltimore for another season.

However, the Broncos were a different matter. Kubiak was Johh Elway’s (the current Broncos general manager) backup from 1983 to 1991 in Denver, and later was part of the team’s coaching staff (from 1993 to 2005), first as a quarterbacks coach and later as an offensive coordinator, being a part of the two Super Bowl wins under Mike Shanahan as the head coach.

Kubiak has almost eight full seasons of head coaching on his CV, going 61-64 from 2006 to 2013 with the Houston Texans, fired before the end of the 2013 season after going 2-11. In the two seasons that came before, he led the Texans to the playoffs twice, winning one game in each postseason before losing in the divisional round to the Ravens one year and then the Patriots 12 months later.

He suffered from a transient ischemic attack during his final season with the Texans, keeping him out of the second half of a game against the Indianapolis Colts.

With Kubiak joining the Broncos, two assistants from the Ravens join him: Quarterbacks coach Rick Dennison and tight ends coach Brian Pariani. They join a team that has made the playoffs four years in a row and finishing with the best record in the AFC (alone or tied) three straight seasons. However, in two of those three seasons they lost in the divisional round, at home, following a bye week. After the 2013 season they made the Super Bowl, crushed by the Seattle Seahawks.

The Atlanta Falcons are now the only team left without a head coach.
