Despite the result of the match between Manchester United and Liverpool, it was Steven Gerrard playing for just 44 seconds and getting a red card that grabbed the attention of the meme makers.
Yes, Gerrard came on at half time, got tackled twice by Ander Herrera and lost his wits, stomping on the Mexican midfielder which didn’t escape the eyes of Martin Atkinson, who was more watchful about what Liverpool players were doing than anything else.
It was the last time Gerrard played in a Northwest Derby, a match he has quite a few great moments in, but this was not one of them. If anyone needed another reason for him to leave Liverpool now, this match and this season are an indication it’s time to say goodbye.
Atkinson should have sent off Phil Jones for a much more severe foul on Jordan Henderson, and there were other bookings Manchester United players should have received he preferred not to. But Liverpool lost because they were inferior for almost the entire 90 minutes, and their captain made one of he dumbest mistakes we’ve seen from a player this season.
