Like in the beginning of every baseball season, Facebook releases a map of how the MLB fans are spread out based on the number of likes in each county. The New York Yankees are basically the only team with a major hold outside of its own TV market.
Which makes sense, being the most successful team in the history of the sort. The Red Sox do get some hold outside of the Northeast, but the Yankees actually dominate entire states, including New Jersey, parts of Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Virginia, Half of Florida, Louisiana, New Mexico and more.
Two teams: The New York Mets and Oakland Athletics get zero counties in their favor, never getting the popular vote in any of them. The San Francisco Giants have been growing in dominance thanks to their titles in 2010, 2012 and 2014. The Los Angeles Angels actually manage to take a small part of Southern California, which also saves a small share for the San Diego Padres.
It’s surprising to see just how dominant the Rangers are throughout Texas, and how the Chicago Cubs dominate Illinois, Indiana (part of it) and most of Nebraska, but in the city of Chicago, the White Sox seem to be the more popular team.
