In another victorious weekend for Barcelona and Real Madrid, the new goal scoring milestones for Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo stood out, although sometimes their numbers are made to be a bit more than they actually are.

Ronaldo scored once in the 3-1 win over Malaga, securing the victory in injury time after a few tense moments in which the visitors delivered some dangerous balls into the box, coming close to scoring. He celebrated in his usual fashion, maybe because he knew he had just scored his 50th goal (in all competitions), becoming the first player to reach that mark four seasons in a row.

Messi is at 46 this season and has three campaigns with more than 50 goals in all competitions, including his debated record of 73 in the 2011-2012 season. He ended up scoring 91 goals in 2012 (calendar year), although FIFA refuses to acknowledge the record for the most goals in a calendar year, citing verifiability issues.

So what did Messi do this weekend to earn himself more applause? He scored his 400th goal for Barcelona in the 2-0 win over Valencia. With the status quo in place (2 point lead for Barcelona at the top of the La Liga), it seemed more fitting to celebrate individual achievements than that of the teams.

The title race is the most important thing, but Ronaldo and Messi, on their own and in the context of the made up personal rivalry, seem to eclipse two of the biggest clubs in the world when there’s nothing truly important to report about.
