In a day filled with Cup Finals across Europe, Arsenal, Barcelona, PSG and Wolfsburg were the big winners, claiming the title in each of their respective matches. For Barcelona and PSG it was the completion of the league championship and domestic cup double. It was even a treble for the French, also winning the Coupe de la Ligue this season.
English FA Cup – Arsenal 4 Aston Villa 0
For the second straight season Arsene Wenger has a title to show those demanding he steps down from the manager role. Arsenal actually managed to finish third (above Manchester United!) and destroy Villa in the Cup final, winning the FA Cup for a 12th time (more than anyone else) and a sixth time under Wenger. Theo Walcott opened the scoring, followed by Alexis Sanchez, Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud.
Spanish Copa Del Rey – Barcelona 3 Athletic Bilbao 1
Barcelona complete the league-cup double with a dominant win at home (although cited as a neutral stadium for the final purposes) over Bilbao, in a match that began with huge boos to the Spanish anthem from both Catalan and Basque fans. Lionel Messi scored one wonder goal and another regular one, Neymar scored one and pissed Bilbao defenders with his diving while Dani Alves showed off the world’s worst haircut.
German DFB-Pokal – Dortmund 1 Wolfsburg 3
For the first time in the club’s history, Wolfsburg win the German cup, coming from behind to leave Dortmund empty handed and without Jurgen Klopp as the season ends, beating them 3-1. In a frantic first half, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang opened the scoring for Dortmund, but goals from Luiz Gustavo, Kevin de Bruyne and Bas Dost turned things around before the 40th minute, as Wolfsburg finish a fantastic season: Second in the league, Cup winners.
Coupe de France – Auxerre 0 PSG 1
The 9th Coupe de France for PSG and their first ever league-cup double, coming in a less than electrifying finale to the season in France. Edinson Cavani scored the only goal in the 65th minute, connecting with a Gregory Van der Wiel cross.
