Copa America – Day 1 Results & Table

The 2015 Copa America begins with the hosts not impressing, but still beating Ecuador 2-0, as Arturo Vidal (from the penalty spot) and Eduardo Vargas gave Chile their first 3 points.

The Chileans finished the match with 10 men after Matias Fernandez, who came off the bench in the 68th minute for fellow playmaker Jorge Valdivia, got sent off with a second yellow card following a reckless challenge. It didn’t help Ecuador (90th minute sending off), who looked like a team more busy in getting in the way than actually trying to win the match.

Vidal, who wasn’t very impressive or influential during the match, set himself up for the penalty kick after getting fouled in the penalty area. Maybe this goal will generate some better football from him later on.

Alexis Sanchez was quite dazzling but that didn’t turn into anything. It was defensive midfielder Eduardo Vargas who scored the second goal, assisted by Sanchez, eliminating any chance of a shocking comeback and loss of points.
