NBA Rumors – Dallas Mavericks Latest Team Giving Greg Oden a Chance

Still trying to make it back into the NBA, Greg Oden is going to be part of the Dallas Mavericks mini camp, hoping they look beyond his history of injuries and overall uselessness and maybe sign him to some sort of contract.

The Miami Heat thought they found themselves a gem in 2013 when they signed Oden in another cheap, minimum contract move they did in an attempt to win another NBA title. LeBron James, Chris Bosh and a little bit of Dwyane Wade carried them to another Finals series, but Oden was never a part of it, becoming less and less involved as the playoffs moved forward.

His most recent numbers? Oden averaged 2.9 points and 2.3 rebounds in 23 games for the Heat, getting 9.2 minutes a night. They more or less forgot about him in the playoffs, as it clearly showed that too much playing time (nine minutes a night, mind you) causes swelling in his knees and it’s just too difficult for him to recapture whatever he had for a short moment during his rookie season with the Blazers.

The allure of having a big man who can do it all (he used to do that) is so strong that Oden keeps getting chances. The Mavericks don’t really risk anything. A contract he’ll sign will probably be far from guaranteed, but it just goes to show how long you can remain relevant in this league despite the enormous amount of history and warning signs if you’re born with the genes that help you reach a certain height.
