After a not too impressive group state, the United States soccer team finally looked like the dominant side they’re expected to be, beating Cuba 6-0 in the Gold Cup quarterfinals, led by a Clint Dempsey hat trick.
Six fans shy of 38,000 saw Dempsey put the USA in the lead after only four minutes. It was a done game by the time the referee whistled for half time, as Gyasi Zardes, Aron Johannsson and Omar Gonzalez scored one goal each to make it 4-0 at the half.
Dempsey kept torturing the Cubans, who lost two of their three group stage matches, and never looked like a side that might be able to come back against a far superior team. It was Dempsey’s first hat trick for the national side, and is leading all scorers in the tournament with six goals.
The win puts the United States in the Semifinals facing Jamaica, who beat Haiti 1-0 with a Giles Barnes goal. The match will be played on July 22 inside the Georgia Dome in Atlanta.
