Despite the massive attendance and the big names, the Roma vs Real Madrid friendly match in Melbourne, Australia never took off and ended in a 0-0 draw to open the International Champions Cup tournament, with the Italians winning 7-6 after a penalty shootout.
The match began with Seydou Keita not shaking hands with Pepe, remembering some of his harsh tackles from Clasico days. Besides that?
Nothing much. Some chances early on, including Gareth Bale hitting the crossbar. Bale was Madrid’s most dangerous player in the match, often frustrating Cristiano Ronaldo, who was the crowd favorite along with Francesco Totti (fantastic in his 32 minutes), with his individualistic style, ignoring teammates much like he did last season. Gervinho was Roma’s most dangerous player, but as usual, showed a unique knack to miss some easy chances.
Keita scored the winner for Roma in the shootout, while Morgan de Sanctis dived to his left to deny new Madrid signing Lucas Vazquez, giving the Italians the 7-6 win. Both sides started with their strongest lineups or something resembling that, pleasing the 80,000 in attendance at the MCG.
