The Philadelphia Phillies, the worst team in Baseball, have been trying to get rid of Jonathan Papelbon for quite some time. Despite some recent interest from the Toronto Blue Jays, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers, the frustrated closer isn’t going anywhere in the meantime.

Papelbon is having a good season, with 16 saves and none blown, making the All-Star game for the first time since 2012 and for the sixth time in his career. However, he isn’t pleased being on a team that’s going to be losing for a very long time. He has one year left on his deal, although it comes with a vesting option worth $13 million that he has qualified for.

The Cubs have called up Rafael Soriano. The Blue Jays are moving Aaron Sanchez to the bullpen. The Dodgers are prioritizing starting pitching at the trade deadline. The Phillies waited too long as they were gathering offers, waiting for the hiring of Andy MacPhail as the team’s new president.

Papelbon clearly isn’t happy playing on a team that’s won just 34 games this year so far, the worst record in Major League Baseball. He has a 1.63 ERA this season, his best since 2006. The 34-year old played his first seven seasons in the league (2005-2011) with the Boston Red Sox.

That’s not what I signed up for. I signed up with a team that won 102 games, and I expected certain things. It didn’t happen, and I’ve tried to ride that ship and keep my mouth shut as much as I can. But it’s time for the Phillies to you-know-what or get off the pot. I feel like three years is plenty enough time to ride it out, so to speak. If the fans don’t understand that, I can’t really side with them.
