You can’t always get what you want, and although Troy Tulowitzki didn’t want to be traded, he was moved by the Colorado Rockies to the Toronto Blue Jays for Jose Reyes and other minor exchanges.

Along with Tulowitzki the Rockies sent 42-year old reliever LaTroy Hawkins to Toronto, while along with Reyes, the Rockies picked up reliever Miguel Castro and two minor league pitchers. Tulowitzki’s contract, which runs through 2020 (2021 team option), gives him a $2 million bonus for being traded, and a no-trade clause from now on.

The seventh overall draft pick in 2005 has been mentioned in trade rumors for the last two or three months, but kept saying that he doesn’t feel like it’s the right thing for him to do.

Whatever happens on the Rockies’ end happens, but for me to sit here and try to force my way out of here, that’s not the case. I don’t think it’s fair to my teammates and the relationships I’ve built here to take that route.

But the Rockies felt differently. He is 30, with a couple of injuries in recent years that have taken something out of him, and isn’t likely to get better. He still is an excellent shortstop, making his fifth All-Star game this season and batting .305/.353/.478/.831, but for the money he’s making the very low prospects of the Rockies doing anything this season and in the very near future, it made more sense to trade him.

The Blue Jays are in the middle of a race to break their playoff drought that has been going on for 22 years. Making the switch with Reyes, who is 32 and making the same kind of money Tulowitzki is made quite a lot of sense. They’re about winning now, trying to not end this season feeling they were frustratingly close to the postseason once again but managed to let it slip away.

Tulowitzki is a two-time Golden Glove winner and twice a Silver Slugger. He is owed $94 million through the 2020 season. Reyes will make $22 million in each of the next two seasons. There’s a $22 million team option in 2019.
