Sunday Goals From the English Premier League

Unlike the rest of the ‘Top 5’, Chelsea couldn’t find a win this weekend, dropping two leads against lowly Aston Villa at Stamford Bridge while Newcastle enjoyed a rare away win at the DW against Wigan. Without further ado, here are the 7 goals from the final 2 matches of gameweek 21 in the English Premier League.

Chelsea 3 – 3 Aston Villa

The most dramatic game of the weekend in England saw Chelsea fail again to reignite their 2010-2011 campaign as they finished in a 3-3 draw with struggling but combative Aston Villa. Frank Lampard scored his first goal since August and only second of the season from the penalty spot, but an Ashley Young penalty (3rd goal of the season) and a 47th minute header from Emile Heskey (3rd of the season as well) turned things around.

Chelsea pressured Villa but couldn’t create too many chances, and those they did manage were brilliantly stopped by Friedel. Houllier failed to recognize the exhaustion on his side and eventually gave up the lead with goals from Drogba and Terry. The celebration at Stamford Bridge didn’t last long as youngster Ciaran Clark scored in injury time, splitting the two points. Chelsea are now fifth with 35 points, six behind United and a game ahead while Villa climb to 15th in the very tight bottom.

Wigan 0 – 1 Newcastle

Newcastle got their first away win since November 7 and climbed to 10th in the table as Shola Ameobi enjoyed the confusion in Wigans’ back and score his fourth goal of the season. The win stopped Newcastle’s 2 game losing streak and was even more remarkable due to the fact Andrew Carroll wasn’t even playing. For Wigan (17th with 20 points) it was their third consecutive home game without a win, the last one coming in November against West Brom.
