Despite the fierce competition from Kyler Murray, it is Kyle Allen who will be the week 1 start for Texas A&M.
Allen, a sophomore who started in the final five games of last season, is from Scottsdale, Arizona and will make his start against #15 Arizona State in Houston, part of the Texas Kickoff. Allen completed 61.5% of his passes last season, throwing 16 touchdown passes and 7 interception.
Murray started training camp as the favorite. A true freshman and five-star recruit out of Allen, Texas, he possibly lost out to Allen because of his size (only 5’11) although that didn’t stop Johnny Manziel from doing incredibly well during his two years wearing Aggies uniform.
Murray will be the backup while junior college signee Jake Hubenak will be the #3 guy. The Aggies started training camp by talking about how all three have a shot at winning the starting job, but Allen, who was 3-2 as a starter for Texas A&M including the road win against Auburn and the bowl game win against West Virginia (and winning the offensive MVP), was by far the most impressive candidate.
