The final preseason round of games was played with mostly backups and team hopefuls on display. Tim Tebow outplayed Matt Barkley for the Philadelphia Eagles, Russell Wilson had one play and one touchdown for the Seattle Seahawks and the Tennessee Titans were another rarity by playing their starting quarterback, Marcus Mariota.
Houston Texans 14 Dallas Cowboys 21: The Cowboys won their last game of the preseason (finally) as Dustin Vaughn played quarterback the entire game. Ben Malena and Gus Johnson ran for touchdowns while Corey White brought back a Tom Savage interception for a third touchdown.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 22 Miami Dolphins 17: A total of six interceptions in the game from the team’s backup quarterbacks including Mike Glennon (Bucs) and Josh Freeman (Dolphins). Khaseem Green of the Buccaneers returned one of those interceptions 98 yards for a touchdown.
Cincinnati Bengals 9 Indianapolis Colts 6: Another turnover-filled game (six overall), including three interceptions thrown by Bryan Bennett (Colts’ backup) and no field goals for either team. A.J. McCarron, the Bengals’ backup QB, fumbled the ball twice, although it was recovered by teammates.
Baltimore Ravens 19 Atlanta Falcons 20: The Falcons built a 20-6 lead before the Ravens scored a couple of fourth quarter touchdowns. Bryn Renner threw a couple of touchdown passes, Sean Renfree threw one, Rex Grossman got on the field while Terron Ward of the Falcons led the game with 69 rushing yards.
New Orleans Saints 10 Green Bay Packers 38: Brett Hundley looked very good for the Packers with four touchdown passes, two of them to Myles White while John Crockett, who had a good day as a receiver as well, ran for another touchdown.
Philadelphia Eagles 18 New York Jets 24: Maybe the most interesting game of the day, as Tim Tebow impressed more than Matt Barkley, throwing for 189 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 32 more. Barkley was just 4-of-9 and one interception. Matt Flynn looked pretty good for the Jets with a couple of touchdown throws.
Jacksonville Jaguars 17 Washington Redskins 16: One of the worst franchises in the NFL playing possibly the most dysfunctional of them, the Jaguars got a good day at quarterback out of Stephen Morris with 160 yards and a touchdown throw. Colt McCoy didn’t look too bad for the Redskins as well with a touchdown throw and 208 yards. Corey Grant ran for 74 yards and a touchdown for the Jags.
Carolina Panthers 23 Pittsburgh Steelers 6: A bad day for Michael Vick, sacked three times while Landy Jones didn’t do a whole lot better. Joe Webb threw a touchdown pass and Jordan Todman ran for 72 yards and a score on a good day for the Panthers backups.
Buffalo Bills 10 Detroit Lions 17: Matt Simms was the only quarterback who played for the Bills (223 yards, no touchdowns or interceptions) while Kellen Moore did a good job for the Lions with one touchdown pass. Ron Brooks returned an interception 81 yards for the Bills only touchdown.
New York Giants 12 New England Patriots 9: In another time, this would have meant a lot more. Ryan Lindley didn’t do much for the Patriots except throw an interception; Ryan Nassib completed 50% of 32 attempts for no touchdowns and no interceptions. All the points came from field goals.
Cleveland Browns 0 Chicago Bears 24: David Fales looked good with two touchdown passes and Sherrod Martin returned an interception for another score. Terrelle Pryor played for the Browns, rushing for nine yards and not catching a single pass, nor was he even targeted.
Minnesota Vikings 17 Tennessee Titans 24: The Vikings’ preseason streak under Mike Zimmer ends despite two touchdown passes from Taylor Heinicke. The Titans actually played Marcus Mariota, who threw for 74 yards and a touchdown, connecting with Harry Douglas.
Kansas City Chiefs 24 St. Louis Rams 17: Both Chase Daniel and Aaron Murray threw a touchdown pass for the Chiefs while Spencer Ware ran for another. Nick Foles played for the Rams, throwing for 49 yards and an interception.
Arizona Cardinals 22 Denver Broncos 20: Logan Thomas looked good for the Cardinals with 9-of-10 for 116 yards and touchdown and Chris Johnson ran for 45 yards. Brock Osweiler threw for 108 yards and a touchdown, but Montee Ball couldn’t impress for the Broncos in the running game with just 27 yards on 16 carries.
San Diego Chargers 12 San Francisco 49ers 14: Dylan Thompson played the entire game for the Niners and threw two touchdown passes, and Jarryd Hayne had another impressive outing with 58 yards on 10 carries with 43 yards on three punt returns as well.
Oakland Raiders 21 Seattle Seahawks 31: Russell Wilson threw one pass for 63 yards and a touchdown, that was it, but who needs more? Matt McGloin threw a couple of touchdown passes for the Raiders and Michael Dyer helped his cause on the running back depth chart with a touchdown of his own.
