The 2015 Rugby World Cup is getting to the point of the really interesting matches, the quarter finals. Here are some short team profiles for the Elite Eight: New Zealand, Australia, Ireland, Wales, South Africa, Argentina, France and Scotland.

Argentina

How they do in the group stage: As expected. Lost to New Zealand then beat Tonga, Georgia and Namibia quite comfortably (finished with 179 points) to finish second in the group.

Up next: Ireland. They’ve lost their last five meetings against the Irish, but on the previous World Cup meeting, in 2007 (France), it was a 30-15 win for Argentina.

Scoring leaders: Santiago Cordero and Juan Imhoff lead the team with three tries each. Nicolas Sanchez, with 51 points (fourth overall in the tournament) leads the team scoring.

Past in the final 8: This is the fourth time for Argentina in the quarter finals. They made it to the semifinals only once, in 2007.

Australia

How they do in the group stage: Perfect. Finished first in the group of death, crushing England and pulling off a massive defensive win over Wales, alongside expected wins against Fiji and Uruguay.

Up next: Scotland. Australia won in 2013, Scotland won the previous two matches. Their last World Cup match was in 2003, with Australia winning 33-16.

Scoring leaders: Australia have five players with two tries each. Bernard Foley with 56 points is third overall in the tournament so far.

Past in the final 8: Two-time champions in 1991 and 1999, Australia have been to every quarter final in the history of the tournament. Only twice, both in losses to England, have they not made the final four.

France

How they do in the group stage: Finished second behind Ireland (beaten 24-9) while winning against Italy, Romania and Canada. Their 120 points in the tournament is second from the bottom among the Elite Eight.

Up next: The All Blacks. New Zealand have won the last 8 meetings, including their two matches in the 2011 World Cup, one of them the final. The French famously beat the All Blacks in the 1999 and 2007 World Cups.

Scoring leaders: Three players with two tries each. Frédéric Michalak with 33 points is their top scorer so far.

Past in the final 8: France always make it to the final 8. They’ve been to the final three times (1987, 1999, 2011) and only once (1991) they’ve been knocked out in the quarters.

Ireland

How they do in the group stage: Perfect. Beat France for the top spot in the group,while also dominating against Canada, Italy and Romania.

Up next: Argentina. They’re on a five-match winning streak against the Pumas, but have lost their last World Cup meeting in 2007.

Scoring leaders: Keith Earls and Rob Kearney each have three tries. Jonathan Sexton leads their point scoring with 31 so far.

Past in the final 8: Ireland have made the quarter final in five of the previous seven tournaments, never getting past this stage, surprisingly.

New Zealand

How they do in the group stage: As expected. Beat Argentina, their one true rival for the first place, and walked all over Georgia, Tonga and Namibia.

Up next: France. While the All Blacks have been on a tear against France with 8 straight wins including twice in the previous World Cup, they’ve been upset twice in the past against the French (1999,2007) including in Cardiff, where the next match takes place.

Scoring leaders: Julian Savea is tied for the lead in the tournament with 5 tries. Dan Carter, scoring 36 points, leads their scoring.

Past in the final 8: Two time champions, the All Blacks have been to every quarter final, losing at that stage just once: To France in 2007.

Scotland

How they do in the group stage: Finished second in a group that was decided on bonus points. Lost to South Africa, beat Japan, Samoa in a massive match and the USA.

Up next: Australia. They’ve won two of the last three against the Wallabies, but lost their lost World Cup encounter in 2003.

Scoring leaders: Tommy Seymour with three tries leads the team. Greig Laidlaw leads the tournament in points with 60.

Past in the final 8: They’ve been to the quarter final in every World Cup but the one in 2011. Only once have they gotten through to the semi final, in 1991.

South Africa

How they do in the group stage: Despite the massive shock in the loss to Japan, scored enough bonus points and beat Scotland, Samoa and the USA to finish first in the group.

Up next: Wales. After 16 consecutive wins since 2000, South Africa lost to Wales on the Autumn tour to Europe in 2014, which was their last meeting. The Springboks beat Wales 17-16 in the group stage of the 2011 World Cup.

Scoring leaders: Bryan Habana with 5 tries is tied for the tournament lead. In points, it’s Handré Pollard with 46.

Past in the final 8: Have always made the quarter final, but have lost on two of five occasions. They’ve won the title in two of the three other instances.

Wales

How they do in the group stage: Finished second behind Australia, losing to the Wallabies, unable to punch through for 20 minutes. They beat England in a massive game, also winning against Fiji and Uruguay.

Up next: South Africa. They lost 16 consecutive times since 2000, but beat the Springboks in their last test match in 2014.

Scoring leaders: Gareth Davies with four tries leads the team. Dan Biggar has scored 42 points.

Past in the final 8: Wales have been to the quarter final four times. In 1987 and 2011, they made it to the semi final, but never further.
