The New Orleans Saints beating the New York Giants 52-49 resulted in them getting close to shaking up the NFL’s scoring history books, but still a bit far from the record, only getting a place of honor among the highest scoring games in NFL history, not becoming THE one.

Cardinals vs Jets, 91 points

The Arizona Cardinals went to the Super Bowl in 2008, but on the way, they lost 56-35 to the New York Jets of all teams. Kurt Warner threw for 472 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions in that game. Brett Favre had six touchdown passes for the Jets with 289 yards.

Redskins vs Packers, 93 points

On a chilly October Monday Night Football game, the Green Bay Packers beat the Washington Redskins at Lambeau Field 48-47 thanks to Redskins kicker Mark Moseley missing a field goal in the final seconds. The Redskins finished 14-2 that season, making the Super Bowl and losing in it. Joe Theismann threw for 398 yards and four touchdowns while John Riggins ran for a couple. Lynn Dickey had three touchdown passes for the Packers.

Dolphins vs Jets, 96 points

Sometimes people forget, but the Jets vs Dolphins is a great rivalry. Maybe the best game came in 1986, with Dan Marino playing for the Dolphins, and the overtime game won 51-45 by the Jets. The contest featured 1,066 yards of combined offense, 59 first downs and 93 total pass attempts. Marino had six touchdown passes while Ken O’Brien threw for 479 yards and 4 TD passes. Wesley Walker caught the game winning touchdown in overtime.

Bengals vs Browns, 96 points

A more modern 96-point game, also ending in a 51-45 score with the Browns actually coming out on top in this 2007 game (finished 10-6 that year). Derek Anderson had five touchdown passes in that game while Carson Palmer finished with six but also two interceptions.

Steelers vs Chargers, 98 points

The San Diego Chargers won that game 54-44. Dan Fouts threw three touchdown passes and three interceptions for the Chargers, getting help from four rushing touchdowns, two by Buford McGee. David Woodley threw three TDs for the Steelers with two interceptions, also running for one himself.

Broncos vs Cowboys, 99 points

One of the best games in recent years with a nice little duel between Peyton Manning and Tony Romo, as the Broncos won 51-48 in Dallas. With the game tied at 48, Romo threw an interception at his own 24-yard line, resulting in Matt Prater hitting a field goal as time expired to win it for Denver. Manning had four touchdown passes and another one he rushed for. Romo finished with 506 yards, five touchdown passes and an interception.

Seahawks vs Chiefs, 99 points

You know all the jokes about Seahawks fans not knowing their team’s history? This is an excellent trivia nugget from them, back from 1983, as they beat the Kansas City Chiefs 51-48 in overtime with Norm Johnson scoring the winning field goal. Curt Warner rushed for 207 yards and three touchdowns while Dave Krieg threw three touchdown passes. Bill Kenney had a big day for the Chiefs with four touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns.

Giants vs Saints, 101 points

The latest entry to the list. Eli Manning throws six touchdown passes with no interceptions and the Giants score 49 points. Drew Brees has seven touchdown passes and one interception. The Saints score 52 points. Do the math. Kai Forbath hit the game winning field goal for the Saints, the only field goal of the day for both teams.

Raiders vs Oilers, 101 points

The “original” 101 points game, back from 1963, which took place in the AFL, although the modern day NFL absorbed that league’s history. The Raiders, then in Oakland, won the game 52-49 on a Mike Mercer field goal with 4:37 left in the fourth quarter. Tom Flores threw six touchdown passes for the Raiders, George Blanda threw for 342 yards and five touchdowns.

Bengals vs Browns, 106 points

More Bengals and Browns? Yep, surprising. The Bengals actually won this game 58-48, as  second-year quarterback  Carson Palmer threw four touchdown passes (and three interceptions) while Rudi Johnson ran for three. Kelly Holcomb had five touchdown throws for the Browns, throwing two interceptions.

Redskins vs Giants, 113 points

It’s soon going to be 50 years and no one is coming close to breaking the record set by the Washington Redskins and New York Giants in the pre-merger days, with the Redskins beating the Giants 72-41. The game had a combined 16 touchdowns and even one field goal. There were no nets behind the goal posts at the time, resulting in 14 footballs being lost in the stands; thirteen on extra points, one was lost by Brig Owens who threw the ball into the crowd after he returned a fumble 62 yards for a score. Sonny Jurgensen threw three touchdown passes for the Redskins and A.D Whitfield ran for a couple. The combination of Tom Kennedy and Gary Wood at quarterback for the Giants resulted in three touchdowns and five interceptions.
