A season with Super Bowl talk ends as the Dallas Cowboys lose for a seventh straight time, on this occasion to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the meme makers are savoring every moment.
Whether Tony Romo returns tomorrow or not at all, it doesn’t matter. The Cowboys aren’t going to win seven in a row and even if they do, 9-7 might not get them into the playoffs. They’ve been close a lot of times (five losses by one possession) but it doesn’t matter: They failed to close the game every time.
And it all comes down to a quarterback injury. The Cowboys had Brandon Weeden to back Romo up, and brought in Matt Cassel to serve as insurance behind Weeden, eventually taking over. Didn’t help. Maybe slightly improved them, but not by enough.
And the NFC East? It’s still bad. The Giants and Eagles keep throwing away the division lead. The Redskins might actually have a shot of finishing first. But the Cowboys? It’ll take a miracle, but they’re not lucky enough this season to enjoy one.
