When Peyton Manning got benched with a 0.0 QBR to his name, it was the 10th time in NFL history since that quarterback measuring stick entered our lives someone had such a game, with the likes of Ryan Leaf, Jeff Garcia, Joey Harrington, Rex Grossman and even Eli Manning providing one for the history books, for all the wrong reasons.
No one is quite sure what the QBR consists of, and sometimes the attempt to define an entire quarterback performance with one absolute number gives us some weird, hard to understand results. However, when a quarterback gets a 0.0, there’s not much to think about it: It was a very bad day.
Ryan Leaf
Who? The number two overall pick in the 1998 draft. The guy some thought to pick over Peyton Manning. Leaf played just 25 games in the NFL before washing out of the league. He’s currently serving a seven-year sentence for burglary and drug possession.
His 0.0: Leaf’s third professional game for the San Diego Chargers produced this stat line: 1-of-15 completions for 4 yards while throwing two interceptions. He also ran for a whopping one yard on four carries in the loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Scott Mitchell
Who? Mitchell was around for 12 seasons, making 71 starts and 99 appearances overall, playing for the Dolphins, Lions, Ravens and Bengals, and somehow has managed to reach a whopping 366 pounds in retirement, making it pretty far in season 16 of the Biggest Loser.
His 0.0: In the dying days of his career (2000), playing for the Cincinnati Bengals, Mitchell came in for Akili Smith in the third quarter against the Pittsburgh Steelers. His first pass was a pick six. Overall, he completed 4-of-16 for 39 yards and two interceptions.
Anthony Wright
Who? A backup for most of his time in the NFL (1999-2007), playing for the Cowboys, Ravens, Bengals and Giants, which means he’s part of the Super Bowl champions Giants of 2007. He went undrafted after playing for South Carolina in college.
His 0.0: In a Christmas day performance he’ll always remember back in 2000 while playing for Dallas, he started for Troy Aikman and completed 5-of-20 passes for 35 yards and throwing two interceptions, while rushing for nine yards as well.
Randy Fasani
Who? A fifth round pick out of Stanford in 2002, Fasani has just one season in the NFL, playing four games and starting once for the Carolina Panthers. He worked as a police officer, high school football coach and sales rep since getting chucked out of the league.
His 0.0: His only career start was so bad the Panthers didn’t want him again. He completed 5-of-18 passes for 46 yards while throwing three interceptions against the hungry Buccaneers defense, also rushing for 15 yards on five carries.
Tim Hasselbeck
Who? Brother of Matt Hasselbeck, Tim was in the NFL from 2002 to 2007, playing for the Eagles, Redskins (five starts), Giants and Cardinals. Since his unsuccessful NFL stint, he’s been mostly seen on TV, talking about sports.
His 0.0: One of his starts for the Redskins in 2003 was against the Cowboys in a 27-0 loss. Hasselbeck threw for 56 yards while completing 6-of-26 passes, getting intercepted four times, averaging a -4.77 on the adjusted yards gained per attempt.
Jeff Garcia
Who? A pretty good quarterback for a while who started his NFL career at 29 after a few years in Canada. He played for the 49ers, Browns, Lions, Eagles, Bucs and Texans, making 116 starts and even six in the postseason, making the Pro Bowl four times.
His 0.0: In 2004 when playing for the Browns he had his low moment against the Dallas Cowboys, completing 8-of-27 passes for 71 yards while throwing 3 interceptions. Rushing for 34 yards didn’t help him improve the abysmal rating.
Eli Manning
Who? A two time Super Bowl champion. The quarterback no one can ever agree upon if he’s elite or not, playing his entire career for the New York Giants, not missing a single start since becoming one, and someone who doesn’t give you the best shot of making the playoffs, but once you’re there, he might be the best quarterback to have. For the last two years, he’s finally playing better than his older brother.
His 0.0: Rookie years often comes with the lowest of the low kind of moments for QBs. Manning got crushed by the Ravens in December, completing just 4-of-18 passes for 27 yards while throwing two interceptions.
Joey Harrington
Who? Maybe the finest symbol of the Lions failures in the draft and on the field during the 00’s. A third overall pick out of Oregon that played for the Lions, Dolphins, Falcons and Saints before finally finding his way out of the league
His 0.0: Came with the Dolphins in 2006, having a brilliant game in a 21-0 loss to Buffalo: 5-of-17 for a total of 20 yards and two interceptions.
Rex Grossman
Who? A pretty successful QB for Florida in college, Grossman played for the Bears, Texans and Redskins in the NFL, helping the Bears make the Super Bowl in 2006 but nothing beyond that.
His 0.0: It was actually in 2006 when the worst game of his career came along, falling flat on his face as Bears quarterbacks tend to do when they see the Packers green in front of them. He completed 2-of-12 passes for 33 yards while throwing three interceptions in that game.
Chris Redman
Who? From 2000 to 2011, Redman played on the field for two NFL teams: The Baltimore Ravens (even getting a Super Bowl ring) and the Atlanta Falcons. He was also on the squad for the Patriots and Titans at a certain point.
His 0.0: Day zero came in 2007 when playing for the Falcons, part of his four game starting stint at the end of the season. He did well on three of those with 8 touchdown passes and two interceptions, but against the Bucs on December 16, he completed just 4-of-15 passes for 34 yards while throwing two interceptions in a 37-3 loss.
Peyton Manning
Who? Maybe the greatest quarterback of all-time, at least in the regular season, owning most of the major passing records. A Super Bowl champion and five-time MVP, he has played for the Indianapolis Colts and Denver Broncos since 1998.
His 0.0: Might be his last start in 2015 and maybe ever. Manning completed 5-of-20 passes for 35 yards while throwing four interceptions in a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, getting benched in the middle of the game.
