18 Most Played Games of the 2015 Rivalry Weekend

The most crucial week in a college football season comes around Thanksgiving – Rivalry week, with games steeped with hatred and history played side by side. From the Iron Bowl between Alabama and Auburn in the SEC to the Big Ten’s Michigan vs Ohio State, also known as The Game, here are the most played of these rivalries heading into the 2015 version of hate week.

A rivalry that’s been around since 1893, but wasn’t played for 41 years, until they finally resumed it in 1948, after the Alabama State Legislature threatened to withhold state funding from the schools unless they did resume the rivalry. Alabama lead it 43-35-1, winning three of the last four, but not winning in Auburn since 2011.

BYU vs Utah State (Old Wagon Wheel) – 85th time

The teams have met 84 times, but the record is 44-31-7 in favor of USC. Math problem? The two USC wins from 2004 and 2005 have been vacated. UCLA have won the series three years in a row, in a rivalry that’s not just about state pride, but is about city pride, with the campuses being only 13.6 miles apart.

Virginia Tech vs Virginia (Commonwealth Cup) – 93rd time

On since 1895 and played annually since 1970, the Hokies lead the series 54-37-5 mostly thanks to the dominance during the Frank Beamer era (which is coming to an end). They’ve won the last 11 games and 15 of the last 16 meetings. Virginia haven’t been victorious in this rivalry since 2003.

North Carolina vs North Carolina State – 105th time

One of the teams is actually ranked for a change this year (Wildcats), in a rivalry that’s been around since 1892 but like a lot of the Big Ten clashes, doesn’t garner a lot of national attention anymore, and possibly never has. Illinois lead the series 55-48-5, winning the last time in Evanston, with the game being played in Chicago (Solider Field) for the first time since 2010.

Vanderbilt vs Tennessee – 110th time
