With the College Football Playoff selection committee making its final rankings, the bowl season is set and ready to go, with the Orange Bowl (Clemson vs Oklahoma) and Cotton Bowl (Alabama vs Michigan State) serving as the semifinal, while the Peach Bowl (Houston vs Florida State), Fiesta Bowl (Notre Dame vs Ohio State), Rose Bowl (Iowa vs Stanford) and Sugar Bowl (Ole Miss vs Oklahoma State) complete the New Year’s six selection, the epicenter of bowl season.
Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl – #18 Houston (12-1) vs #9 Florida State (10-2)
When & Where: Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia on December 31 at 12 PM ET.
More: The Cougars are going to a major bowl game with a first year coach, Tom Herman. It’s their first major bowl game since the 1980’s, when playing in the Cotton Bowl was a regular thing for them. With Jimbo Fisher, the Seminoles have won four of their five Bowl Game visits. Houston have the edge in the series (12-2-2) but they haven’t played since 1978.
Capital One Orange Bowl (Playoff Semifinal) – #1 Clemson (13-0) vs #4 Oklahoma (11-1)
When & Where: Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida on December 31 at 4 PM ET.
More: Both schools are in the CFP for the first time. Clemson have won their last three Bowl Games under Swinney, while Stoops won the 2000 national championship with Clemson at the Orange Bowl. The series is tied at 2-2 between the teams, with Clemson winning the 2014 meeting at the Russell Athletic Bowl 40-6, the most recent one.
Goodyear Cotton Bowl Classic (Playoff Semifinal) – #2 Alabama (12-1) vs #3 Michigan State (12-1)
When & Where: AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on December 31 at 8 PM ET.
More: Alabama are the only team in the playoffs for a second time, losing to a Big Ten team the year before. Michigan State have won four in a row during Bowl Season, including the Cotton Bowl last year. The two teams have met just once and very recently, playing in the Capital One Bowl on January 1, 2011, with Alabama crushing MSU 49-7.
BattleFrog Fiesta Bowl – #8 Notre Dame (10-2) vs #7 Ohio State (11-1)
When & Where: University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona on January 1 at 1 PM ET.
More: The Buckeyes are the leaving national champions, winning in the Fiesta Bowl last year. Notre Dame are in a major bowl game for the first time under Brian Kelly. Ohio State lead the all-time series 3-2, beating the Irish in the Fiesta Bowl 34-20 on January 2006.
Rose bowl – #5 Iowa (12-1) vs #6 Stanford (11-2)
When & Where: Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California on January 1 at 4:30 PM ET.
More: Iowa have lost their last three bowl games under Kirk Ferentz, playing in their first major bowl game since the 2009 Orange Bowl. Stanford are in their third Rose Bowl with David Shaw, going 1-1. This will be the first meeting between the Hawkeyes and The Cardinal.
Allstate Sugar Bowl – #12 Ole Miss (9-3) vs #16 Oklahoma State (10-2)
When & Where: Superdome in New Orleans Louisiana on January 1 at 8:30 PM ET.
More: Ole Miss got destroyed last year in the Peach Bowl, OSU have won four of their last five under Mike Gundy in Bowl season. The two teams have met twice in bowl games, both being the Cotton Bowl, both won by Ole Miss.
