MLB Rumors – New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers & Arizona Diamondbacks Interested in Signing Jose Fernandez

The Miami Marlins might not be a very good team, but they have some special young talent there, including Jose Fernandez, who is drawing interest for a trade from the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks.

There isn’t a very big chance the Marlins are willing to listen to anything, but all three teams seem to be doing scouting and some background information checks on his personality and maybe hoping to put together a good enough trade package to convince the Marlins to give him up. One rumor suggested the Marlins asked the Dodgers for rookie shortstop Corey Seager, outfielder Scott Van Slyke and Los Angeles’ top pitching prospect, Julio Urias.

The Marlins, if they actually do agree to move him, will probably be looking for packages that include five players coming their way, and obviously not just scrubs teams want to get rid of. The 23-year old Cuban who went to high school in Tampa made his debut in 2013, making the All-Star game. He finished third on the Cy Young voting that season (2.19 ERA, 12-6 record, 9.7 strikeouts per nine innings) and won the National League’s rookie of the year award.

In three seasons with the Marlins, he has posted a 2.40 ERA, going 22-9 in 47 starts, with 10.5 strikeouts per nine innings. He started in just 11 games last season, going 6-1 with a 2.92 ERA while striking out 11 batters per nine innings. Teams are concerned about his health and fitness, but if the Marlins give the go ahead, all three mentioned above would jump at the opportunity to complete a trade for him, ignoring his Tommy John surgery and recent bicep strain.

Hernandez made $651,000 last season, and will be eligible for arbitration after the 2016 season. He hits free agency for the first time in 2019.
