It’s a special season for Sporting CP, battling for the Primeira Liga title which they haven’t won since 2002. Their fans know it’s special, and provided a unique kind of atmosphere before the 5-1 win over Arouca.
Not just the 46014 fans packing Estádio José Alvalade sang their hearts out. Manager Jorge Jesus, who signed on to coach the team before this season after six seasons as the head coach of Benfica SL, with whom he won three league titles, was also quite passionate in his singing.
With the win, Sporting make it to the top of the league again. They have 65 points, one more than Benfica, although Benfica do have one less match played, which they will complete on Sunday.
Sporting were already up 4-0 at half time and scored their fifth goal before the hour was up. Colombian striker Teofilo Gutierrez scored a brace (making it to five this season), Joao Mario scored two as well, making it to five this season too. The fifth goal was scored by Bryan Ruiz, only his fourth goal since arriving at the beginning of this season from Fulham.
