While the Cleveland Cavaliers are trying to win a championship, LeBron James is busy sending mixed signals through social media and other interviews, with a comment he made on Bleacher Report regarding a potential link up with Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul.
The big four? Sounds impossible to be honest and even if it does somehow happen, it won’t be next season, and it’ll no longer make this group favorites to be NBA champions. James mentioning this fantasy scenario comes from an article by Howard Beck on the friendship between James and Anthony, but it is known that the four stars who’ll end up in the Hall of Fame are very good friends off the court. James and Wade shared two NBA titles and four NBA finals together as well.
I really hope that, before our career is over, we can all play together. At least one, maybe one or two seasons—me, Melo, D-Wade, CP—we can get a year in. I would actually take a pay cut to do that. It would be pretty cool. I’ve definitely had thoughts about it. We’ll see.
And from this theories are born. It isn’t enough that James has been using Twitter and Instagram for some cryptic messaging that may or may not be about Kyrie Irving or his unhappiness with what’s going on in the Cleveland Cavaliers locker room. It isn’t enough that James stopped following the Cavaliers on Twitter, although many think this has to do with some preemptive focus strike on the NBA playoffs. Now there’s this to dive into.
James has promised never to leave Cleveland again, but no one seems to believe him. He has done everything this season to make it seem like he’s had enough of his attempts to win a championship there. The unstoppable force of the Golden State Warriors in a possible finals rematch isn’t filling him with confidence too. But in order to somehow make this happen, it has to be more than just James leaving his current post.
Wade doesn’t look like he’s planning on leaving Miami. With three championship rings there and being the greatest athlete in the history of pro sports in South Beach, there’s no historic pressure pushing him to win now or be deemed as something of a disappointment or failure. Paul and Anthony are in a different spot. No championship rings, not even coming close to that (Paul has never been to a conference final). They might be realizing their quest won’t be answered by sticking around with their current teams.
But while that all can happen at some point during the future, the Cavaliers have to deal with yet another potential locker room drama. And that’s the cost of having James, a player Cleveland has done everything possible to accommodate, with the players they’ve signed and probably with the head coach they fired. Even with the new one, James doesn’t seem happy, and unless the Cavaliers do as well as they did last season, it’s going to be a summer filled with speculation and who knows, maybe the Decision 2.0.
