MLB April 5 Scores & Standings

Dexter Fowler Home Run

Most of the talk following the third day of the 2016 MLB season had to do with the Utley sliding rule, which cost the Toronto Blue Jays a win against the Tampa Bay Rays. The Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants remain undefeated through two games.

Chicago Cubs 6  Los Angeles Angels 1: The Cubs win their second game in the series as Jon Lester picks up his first win, giving up four hits and one run in seven innings. Matt Szczur, Dexter Fowler and Anthony Rizzo all hit home runs while the Jason Heyward added another RBI while grounding out.

Houston Astros 5  New York Yankees 3: Delayed opening day went the Astros way with a strong 7-inning performance from Dallas Keuchel, giving up only three hits and striking out five. Dellin Betances picked up the loss for the Yankees after his throwing error allowed the Astros to take the lead in the 8th.

Boston Red Sox 6  Cleveland Indians 2: A nice start for the Red Sox with David Price striking out 10 batters in his debut for the Bostonians. Corey Kluber had a rough time, giving up nine hits and four runs in less than six innings. Mookie Betts and David Ortiz hit home runs for the Sox.

New York Mets 2  Kansas City Royals 0: Noah Syndergaard was untouchable, allowing three hits and striking out nine in a six-inning shutout with Jeurys Familia closing the deal. Neil Walker made the only scoring hit of the game, bringing in himself and Yoenis Cespedes with a two-run homer.

St. Louis Cardinals 5  Pittsburgh Pirates 6: The Pirates win again against their division rivals on an 11th inning walkoff single by shortstop Jordy Mercer.

Detroit Tigers 8  Miami Marlins 7: Opening day in South Florida brought plenty of big hits (home runs for Giancarlo Stanton, Ian Kinsler, Anthony Gose and J.D. Martinez) and some drama, with Kinsler hitting an 11th inning single (scoring Gose) to win the game.

Toronto Blue Jays 2  Tampa Bay Rays 3: Toronto lose for the first time on a call made thanks to the Chase Utley rule, cancelling out the Jose Bautista slide. Toronto had a 2-0 lead, but home runs from Corey Dickerson and Logan Forsythe gave the Rays their first win of the season.

Seattle Mariners 10  Texas Rangers 2: A weird opening day for Seattle was replaced with a bountiful second one in Arlington, allowing 11 hits and three home runs to Nelson Cruz, Robinson Cano and Luis Sardinas, who came on to pinch hit.

San Francisco Giants 2  Milwaukee Brewers 1: Johnny Cueto had a wonderful Giants debut with 7 innings and only one run given up (six hits, four strikeouts), winning thanks to a Brandon Crawford home run and a Matt Duffy RBI grounding out.

Colorado Rockies 6  Arizona Diamondbacks 11: The game opened with home runs from Paul Goldschmidt and Jean Segura for the Diamondbacks, the Rockies turned it around to lead 6-2 on the back of homers by Trevor Story (his third already), Nick Hundley and D.J. LeMahieu, but Arizona scored nine in the sixth and 7th to win for the first time this season.

Chicago White Sox 5  Oakland A’s 4: The White Sox win again despite Nate Jones blowing a lead, yet picking up the win. Todd Frazier hit a big three-run homer to kick thing off, Jimmy Rollins hit a home run to break the late deadlock and win the game.

Los Angeles Dodgers 3  San Diego Padres 0: The Dodgers bounce the Padres again with a shutout that included Scott Kazmir giving up just one hit and striking out five without walking anyone. Yasiel Puig hit a triple that scored two and the rest seemed easy enough with great pitching.
