The New York Yankees won for the first time this season with a massive onslaught of big hitting on the Houston Astros, while the Los Angeles Dodgers didn’t just sweep the San Diego Padres: They shut them out in every one of the games.
Toronto Blue Jays 3 Tampa Bay Rays 5: Despite going down 3-0 early to a Josh Donaldson three-run homer (left early), the Rays relied on two home runs from Steven Souza Jr. to turn the game upside down and pick up a second straight win.
San Francisco Giants 3 Milwaukee Brewers 4: The Brewers win for the first time this season thanks to Chris Carter, hitting a home run in the 3rd to put them up for the first time in the game and his sacrifice fly in the 7th to break the 3-3 deadlock.
Seattle Mariners 9 Texas Rangers 5: The Mariners blasted the Rangers with 14 hits (rough day for Wade Miley), as Robinson Cano homered twice, both of them also scoring Kyle Seager. Cano already has four this season.
Colorado Rockies 4 Arizona Diamondbacks 3: The Rockies got their home run thing going again, scoring all four runs on three homers. Trevor Story hit his fourth of the season, D.J. LeMahieu hit his second and Ryan Raburn hit his first.
Detroit Tigers 7 Miami Marlins 3: The Tigers make it 2-0 against the Marlins behind Jarrod Saltalamacchia’s four RBIs, including one two-run homer. Victor Martinez also hit a two-run homer in the 7th to make sure the Marlins couldn’t dream about coming back.
Boston Red Sox 6 Cleveland Indians 7: Things are even in this series following a nice finish from the Indians to come from behind and win the game. At 6-5 Red Sox, Juan Uribe hit a sac fly to center, scoring Yan Gomes and tying the game. Mike Napoli, another offseason pickup, hit the game winning home run in the 7th off of Junichi Tazawa.
Philadelphia Phillies 2 Cincinnati Reds 3: In the battle of the tanking/rebuilding teams the Reds won again, getting a strong mound performance from Brandon Finnegan with nine strikeouts in six innings, although the game was won in the ninth thanks to a two-RBI double by Scott Schebler.
Minnesota Twins 2 Baltimore Orioles 4: It’s 2-0 for the Orioles this season, getting the first home run from Chris Davis. Yovani Gallardo made his debut in Baltimore, allowing two hits and one run while striking out four before turning things over to the bullpen.
Houston Astros 6 New York Yankees 16: An explosion of bats for the Yankees to win their first of the season, not letting Collin McHugh take his start into the second inning. The Yankees were up 6-1 after the first, followed by both Starlin Castro and Mark Teixeira hitting three-run homers in the 2nd and 3rd to go up 12-5 before more runs came flying in the 6th and 7th. Michael Pineda didn’t have a very good game (allowing 8 hits and six runs), but still got the win.
St. Louis Cardinals 1 Pittsburgh Pirates 5: An impressive three-game start for the Pirates, who had Juan Nicasio this time making the Cards hitters miserable with seven strikeouts in six innings.
Washington Nationals 3 Atlanta Braves 1: The Nationals win again vs their division rivals behind a good start for Stephen Strasburg and a 7th inning turnaround, winning the game on a Matt dan Dekker double that scored Wilson Ramos and Danny Espinosa.
Los Angeles Dodgers 7 San Diego Padres 0: Not just three wins, but three shutouts, something that’s never happened in an opening day series. Kenta Maeda made his major league debut by picking up a win and hitting a home run. Yasiel Puig also hit one, his first of the season.
Chicago White Sox 1 Oakland A’s 2: The Athletics win for the first time this season, as Sonny Gray carries his start 7 innings and allowing only three hits. A sac fly by Jed Lowrie and and a home run by Mark Canha took care of the scoring.
