The Chicago Cubs looked great against the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Washington Nationals shut out the Kansas City Royals to win number four in a row and the New York Mets used power hitting and the charm of Bartolo Colon to get back to their winning ways.
Texas Rangers 2 Â Toronto Blue Jays 1:Â A.J. Griffin struck out nine batters in six innings but didn’t get the win, as the Rangers picked it up late in the game thanks to a home run by Nomar Mazara in the 8th inning.
San Francisco Giants 9 Â Cincinnati Reds 6:Â Johnny Cueto had a rough five innings that included striking out eight batters and giving up six runs, but his offense and bullpen corrected things, coming back from 6-3 down, mostly due to Brandon Crawford with a three run homer and a single RBI in the 9th.
Chicago Cubs 7 Â Pittsburgh Pirates 2:Â Jason Hammel needed five innings to make it up to 4-0 with a 1.24 ERA, while Ben Zobrist had himself a strong offense day that included two RBIs and one run for himself thanks to a wild pitch by Kyle Lobstein.
Atlanta Braves 1 Â New York Mets 4:Â Bartolo Colon improved to 2-1 this season, pitching eight innings and striking out seven batters while his offense took care of business with three home runs by David Wright, Yoenis Cespedes and Lucas Duda.
Los Angeles Angels 5 Â Milwaukee Brewers 8:Â Jimmy Nelson didn’t have the smoothest of starts, but still did enough in seven innings of work to get the win. Jonathan Lucroy and Jonathan Villar both had two RBIs while Ryan Braun, with an infield single in the 6th, got his 21st RBI of the season.
Minnesota Twins 6 Â Houston Astros 2:Â Two of the most disappointing teams this season now have the same 8-18 record. Dallas Keuchel won his last 17 games at home but the Twins took care of that with 4th and 5th inning offense. Standing out was Eduardo Nunez with a home run and another RBI.
Washington Nationals 2 Â Kansas City Royals 0:Â The Nationals allowed only five hits while blanking the Royals, win going to Gio Gonzalez for six innings of work. The Nats got their offense early, scoring two runs in the first thanks to Ryan Zimmerman and Daniel Murphy.
Philadelphia Phillies 3 Â St. Louis Cardinals 10:Â Adam Wainwright finally had a good game (2-3, 6.68 ERA) while the inconsistent Cardinals hit five home runs, including one by Wainwright himself, finishing with three RBIs.
Seattle Mariners 4 Â Oakland Athletics 3:Â The A’s got only six hits in the entire game, all off of Nathan Karns, followed by a bullpen that didn’t give anything away. Adam Lind, Kyle Seager and Chris Iannetta got RBIs for the Mariners, while Norichika Aoki scored thanks to a throwing error.
Colorado Rockies 1 Â San Diego Padres 2:Â A Matt Kemp two run double in the first inning was enough for the Padres to hang on to, with James Shields striking out five, followed by three bullpen players not giving up a single hit and only one walk while striking out six.
