When the series between the San Antonio Spurs and Oklahoma City Thunder began, no one expected Russell Westbrook & Kevin Durant to be up 3-2 after five games. The meme makers are relishing the surprising turn of events.
Spurs fans might be thinking that the referees are costing them a chance to make it to the conference finals, but their inability to get going on offense for the fourth straight game is probably the bigger reason. That, and Russell Westbrook finally delivering late in a close game.
After some horrendous shooting and his usual round up of mistakes late in previous games, Westbrook showed up for the big finish. He did almost get the wrong kind of quadruple double with 8 turnovers, but he scored 10 points in the fourth quarter, stayed focused on defense for a change and was breathing fire as he willed the Thunder into a late, small comeback, while the Spurs froze.
San Antonio scored only three points in the final four minutes. Kawhi Leonard, LaMarcus Aldridge – both of them might be the present and future of the Spurs, but without a little bit of help from the original big three (Parker, Duncan and Ginobili scored 17 points combined), this looks like another season of playoff disappointment.
