Remember yesterday? Bafetimbi Gomis? We said all a striker has to do is score, no matter how bad he was throughout the match? This was the 2.0 version, as Mario Gomez stormed on the rebound from Julio Cesar’s bad parry, completing the first half of Bayern Munich’s revenge on Inter Milan for last year’s Champions League final, giving the Bavarians a vital 1-0 away win in the first leg.
In the last 15 minutes Thomas Kraft and the Bayern defense withstood heavy pressure from Inter who just couldn’t find a way to beat the 22 year old keeper, showcasing fantastic positioning and instincts on the goal line throughout the match.
Inter were able to neutralize Bayern’s biggest threat, Arjen Robben, with Esteban Cambiasso constantly helping the defender (mostly Chivu) on Robben. He couldn’t get a chance to cut in the middle as he loves to do. Only in the 89th minute he managed to escape, and his shot was the one Cesar parried poorly, leaving an unmarked Gomez to score his 7th Champions League goal of the season.
Early thoughts on the second leg – Inter have a chance, but not a big one. Samuel Eto’o was a great threat during the first half as Bayern’s improvised central defense couldn’t handle the Cameroonian. Kraft could. Schweinsteiger won’t be so timid and shy from joining the front four in Munich and Gustavo seems like a very promising player next to him.

If the Bayern attack can create movement and options for Mueller, who always finds a way to be open but never find an open man, Bayern should be able to score more than one against Inter. Lucio was wonderful tonight, but I just don’t think Inter have the same wind beneath their wings like last year. Sneijder, Cambiasso, pretty much everyone but Eto’o seems to have lost a step from last season.
By the way, our editor tweeted this just before the Bayern goal. Get a job, boss.
