Copa América Centenario – Day 9 Scores & Table

Chicharito

There’s still one more match left to play for each team in group C, but the qualifiers are already set: Mexico and Venezuela will be in the quarter finals, Jamaica (expectedly) and Uruguay (shockingly) are out.

Uruguay 0  Venezuela 1The 2011 champions are out of the tournament, losing for the second time in two matches, in a match that will mostly be remembered for the tantrum thrown by Luis Suarez on the bench, when he realized he won’t be playing with time running out. Salomon Rondon scored the only goal of the match in the 36th minute. Fernando Muslera was out of position, leading to a 50-yard effort by Alejandro Guerra. Muslera was able to save that creative attempt, but Rondon was first to score off the rebound, a goal that puts Venezuela in the quarterfinals.

Mexico 2  Jamaica 0Mexico, like Venezuela, are in the quarterfinals. Javier Hernandez opened the scoring in the 18th minute with a nice header, after fine cross by Jesus Corona, breaking free of his marker near the penalty area. After over an hour of dominance and mostly missing good opportunities, Oribe Peralta scored his first goal of the tournament with nine minutes to go, after some tense minutes, as the change from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3 didn’t stop Jamaica from testing Guillermo Ochoa time after time.
