In a huge National League collision, the Washington Nationals and Max Scherzer dominated the Chicago Cubs, while Zack Greinke kept the Arizona Diamondbacks on a roll with some impressive pitching against his former team, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Philadelphia Phillies 7 Â Toronto Blue Jays 0:Â Jerad Eickhoff paved the way from the mound, while home runs from Ryan Howard and Odubel Herrera stood out in a shutout win for the Phillies.
Cincinnati Reds 9 Â Atlanta Braves 8:Â In a game with plenty twists and turns, the ending was a bit anti-climatic, as the Reds won on a walk by Tyler Holt, who also had an RBI earlier to tie the game. Tony Cingrani did a good job of closing it in the ninth.
Chicago Cubs 1 Â Washington Nationals 4:Â Impressive performance by Max Scherzer, striking out 11 and giving up only two hits in 7 innings. Wilson Ramos hit his 10th home run of the season while the Cubs’ bats kept whiffing.
Detroit Tigers 9 Â Chicago White Sox 10:Â The White Sox were behind by 7 runs, but a two-run homer by Jose Abreu kicked off the rally, as Abreu picked up another RBI later and Dioner Navarro hit a home run. The Tigers got the lead again in the 9th, but Brett Lawrie and Avisail Garcia forced extra innings, and Adam Eaton won the game with a walk-off single to center.
Cleveland Indians 1 Â Kansas City Royals 2:Â Edinson Volquez allowed only two hits in his start, shutting out the Indians in his 7 innings. A single from Alcides Escobar and a home run by Whit Merrifield took care of offense.
Los Angeles Dodgers 2 Â Arizona Diamondbacks 3:Â The Dodgers lose a third game in a row, the Diamondbacks win a third in a row. Zack Greinke beat his former team with six strikeouts in 7 innings, getting offensive help from Paul Goldschmidt, Jake Lamb and Jean Segura.
Minnesota Twins 9 Â Los Angeles Angels 4:Â The Twins so rarely put together a winning streak it’s always shocking to see. Trevor Plouffe, Byron Buxton and Robbie Grossman hit home runs for Minnesota.
Texas Rangers 5 Â Oakland Athletics 14:Â The Rangers are finally stopped, unable to withstand the offensive storm unleashed by the A’s, splitting their fury between Cesar Ramos and Tom Wilhelmsen. Both Khris Davis and Josh Phegley hit three-run homers. Davis got five RBIs in the game.
Miami Marlins 13 Â San Diego Padres 4:Â The Marlins finally get their offense to click, and big time. They had 19 hits and only one home run in their big win over San Diego, including four RBIs for Adeiny Hechavarria.
Milwaukee Brewers 5 Â San Francisco Giants 11:Â The Giants carry the momentum from the series against the Dodgers, this time without any need for pitchers duels. Denard Span had three hits and one home run, Brandon Crawford finished with three RBIs. Matt Cain didn’t even make it out of the fourth inning, but the Giants had enough offense to make up for that.
