Euro 2016: Day 5 Results & Table (Austria vs Hungary, Portugal vs Iceland)

Hungary Celebrations

Austria 0  Hungary 2An eventful match that went in a very different direction than everyone expected. Austria dominated possession and created more chances, but Adam Szalai, once an Arsenal target, stunned the crowd with his 62nd minute goal, which was followed by a soft second yellow card to Aleksandar Dragovic, leaving Austria with 10 men. The Austrians were still more dangerous in the final minutes, but they left their defense completely exposed, making it easy for Zoltan Stieber to score the second goal in the 87th minute, and complete the biggest upset in the tournament so far.

Portugal 1 Iceland 1Another enjoyable match with a surprising result to some. Iceland looked a bit stunned in the first half from Portugal’s speed and ball movement, resulting in a fabulous goal by Nani. However, in the few minutes we saw some attacking football from Iceland in their Euro debut, they managed to score, equalizing in the 50th minute through Birkir Bjarnason. Portugal never really recovered from that equalizer, and Cristiano Ronaldo put in a disappointing performance, disappearing completely in the second half.

What did we learn

  • Austria are talented and can create and pose a threat from a number of angles and directions. But they’re finishing is a problem, which might be what dooms their tournament, if it isn’t doomed already
  • Hungary aren’t easy on the eyes to watch, but they defended well enough, and were patient enough before opening up a little bit, to put themselves in an excellent position which no one thought they’d be in
  • Portugal are more than just Ronaldo, but without him actually looking like he’s willing to be part of the team, they’re going to end up extremely disappointed
  • Undefeated in their one Euro match, frustrating Portugal and imposing their physicality for short stretches during matches is the best they can hope for in this tournament
