The memes weren’t slow to react on the first big trade of the NBA offseason, making fun of the Chicago Bulls trading Derrick Rose to the New York Knicks, but everyone in this deal gets their share of reference, and not in a good way.

The Rose jokes are obvious: Injuries, ambulances, doctors, ACLs. What can you expect? Even after Rose’s healthiest season since 2010-2011, the perception of him being one of the most fragile NBA players out there lives on. It takes more than one relatively injury-free season to shed it away. It probably has a lot to do with his ability never returning to the highs of 2011.

The Knicks? Well, with the rumors of Dwight Howard signing for them catching fire, they seem to be building a championship-caliber team, if this was 2011. Carmelo Anthony is probably happy he’s getting some big names next to him, but are the Knicks actually getting better? Maybe in the short run, but not good enough to contend for anything, and in the long run this deal probably gives them no edge.

And the Bulls, for taking what seems to be another step towards a long awaiting abyss. Joakim Noah will be leaving, Pau Gasol is gone too. Jimmy Butler can now be the center of a rebuilding team, but where are all the championship hopes from about a year ago? Gone, replaced by uncertainty.
