Memes are coming out left and right since the decision has been made: Kevin Durant leaves the Oklahoma City Thunder to join the Golden State Warriors. As expected, none of them are very supportive and understanding of Durant.
Even if he did simply do what he thinks is best for his chances to win a championship, and of course the Warriors will try to add one of the best players in the NBA if they think it won’t force them to make too many concessions, NBA fans, not just Thunder fans, don’t have to like it. More than anything, this feels like the Superteam concept going a little bit too far.
Durant didn’t just join a team with stars. He joined the finalist of the last two seasons, the 2015 champions, a team that won 73 regular season games in 2015-2016, with the reigning two-time MVP Stephen Curry and maybe most importantly, it’s the team that beat the Thunder 4-3 in the conference finals, as Durant played a big part in choking away a 3-1 series lead.
His legacy? What people think about him? What Thunder fans now think about him? What Russell Westbrook is thinking? Durant doesn’t care, or simply put his goal of winning titles as soon as possible above everything. LeBron James did something similar, but not exactly the same. Durant really took the easiest route possible. It’s his prerogative, but he deserves to get the criticism he’s receiving.
