Throwback jerseys are cool, but a Michael Jordan jersey from the movie Space Jam, with the Tune Squad logo on the front? That’s a little bit beyond simply “cool”.
If you’re aware or not, Space Jam 2 is in the works, probably with LeBron James. Even if it does make you feel like it’s desecrating something holy from your childhood, it’s hard to believe people who watched the first film won’t be going to the second one. And what’s a more appropriate set of clothing to wear to that movie than the Jordan Tune Squad jersey?
For those who don’t know, Space Jam came out in 1996. A movie about Michael Jordan coming back from retirement to play alongside Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck and other Loony Tunes classics, in a game for the fate of the Looney Tunes. Against who? Against a bunch of tiny aliens, working for Mr. Swackhammer, who runs an intergalactic amusement park called Moron Mountain. The tiny aliens steal the abilities of Charles Barkley, Shawn Bradley, Patrick Ewing, Larry Johnson, and Muggsy Bogues, which makes for a more interesting game. The end? If you haven’t seen it, we won’t spoil it for you, but remember, it was intended for kids.
The move made over $230 million worldwide on a $80 million budget, but that’s just the box office, and with things like these, the merchandise is what really works. And it sure did. Over the years, from a piece of ordinary cartoon material, it turned into a nostalgia classic, making this Jordan jersey not just vintage, btu extremely awesome to walk around with. And if you’re planning on getting one, it’s available on Amazon in black or white, with sizes from small through XX-Large, currently going for $19.99 to $29.99.
