While Team USA goes around beating up teams from around the world to get ready for the Olympics, they’re also having fun on a plane, with the now famous session of Jimmy Butler, Kyrie Irving and others singing “A Thousand Miles” by Vanessa Carlton, to the annoyance of Carmelo Anthony and the weird looking Kevin Durant.
Besides the hilarious video, filmed by DeMar DeRozan, while everyone seems to be happy watching Anthony look miserable and unhappy, are two memes that sprung up shortly after, referring to Anthony’s annoyed face, and Durant showing up covered in a blanket.
As for Anthony, a two-time gold medalist who is going for number three, it seems like he’s in a Danny Glover kind of mood: I’m getting too old for this s***. Durant? It’s arguable: Either he’s doing his best E.T. impersonation, or he’s still trying to hide from Russell Westbrook.
Butler was 13 when the song came out. Irving was 10. Anthony? He was just before his first and only season at Syracuse. Maybe he remembers how uncool the song was. Maybe he just hates to hear those guys sing.
