For once, the front office action trumped whatever was going on the baseball field, but some of the stadium action was still noteworthy: The Chicago Cubs shutting out the Miami Marlins, the New York Yankees sneaking away with a victory against the New York Mets, and the Boston Red Sox with a ninth inning home run by Mookie Betts beating the Seattle Mariners.
New York Yankees 6 Â New York Mets 5:Â The Yankees were behind 5-3 as they head into the 8th inning. Then, Didi Gregorius hit a two-RBI single to tie the game, leading to a 10th inning sacrifice fly by Starlin Castro that put them ahead. Adam Warren, back on the team, got the win with 2 k’s in 2 innings of work. Dellin Betances got the save.
Minnesota Twins 12 Â Cleveland Indians 5:Â All the trades and changes, not all of them on show, didn’t help the Indians. Max Kepler had three home runs, two of them off of Danny Salazar who did badly and left early, now with a risk that his elbow is injured. Andrew Miller pitched for the Indians, giving up a home run to Joe Mauer.
Miami Marlins 0 Â Chicago Cubs 5:Â The Cubs shut down the Mariners with Kyle Hendricks giving up 7 hits in nine innings of work, striking out 5. Anthony Rizzo had three hits and two runs, Addison Russell led the team with a couple of RBIs.
Kansas City Royals 3 Â Tampa Bay Rays 0:Â The Royals stop losing, the Rays aren’t playing the Yankees anymore. Danny Duffy played 8 innings, striking out 16 and allowed just one hit in a fantastic performance, while Kendrys Morales stood out on offense with his 17 home run of the season.
Toronto Blue Jays 1 Â Houston Astros 2:Â A loss that puts the Blue Jays one game behind the Orioles in the AL East, while the Astros are 5.5 games behind the Rangers in the West. A Russell Martin home run sent the game into extra innings, but Jose Altuve finished the long day with a home run in the 14th.
Washington Nationals 14 Â Arizona Diamondbacks 1:Â Stephen Strasburg looked great in his 15th win, allowing three hits and striking out 6 in 6 innings. Surprisingly for such a score, the Nationals didn’t hit a single home run, opening a five game lead over the Mets in the NL East.
Boston Red Sox 2 Â Seattle Mariners 1:Â The Red Sox are again just one game behind Baltimore for the division lead, getting a fantastic save from Craig Kimbrel with 3 strikeouts in the final inning, while Mookie Betts hit the ninth inning home run that gave them the lead, two innings after Aaron Hill tied the game with a home run of his own.
Milwaukee Brewers 3 Â San Diego Padres 7:Â Both teams gave up a lot in order to keep on rebuilding during the final day of approved trades. Jarred Cosart didn’t play well, leaving the game before the end of the 4th. The Padres managed to adjust, scoring five runs in the 5th, including a two-RBI single by Yangervis Solarte, and an RBI triple by Ryan Schimpf.
