The 2016 Olympics have already begun in Rio and all over Brazil, but the first gold medals will be handed out on Saturday. Cycling will see Chris Froome in the men’s road race trying to win gold, but most of the focus will be on the pool, with four finals, including the men’s and women’s 400 IMs and the women’s 4×100 metre freestyle relay, with Australia the big favorites to win.

Archery

The Men’s Team final will be held on Saturday, with South Korea, the United States, Italy and Australia already in the quarter finals. South Korea are favored to win the gold medal, especially after finishing third in London. Italy beat the United States in the final to take gold four years ago.

Cycling

The men’s road race event will be held on Saturday. The course is 241.6 km long. Starting at Fort Copacabana, the peloton will head west to pass through Ipanema, Barra, and Reserva Maripendi Beaches via the coastal road leading to the 24.8 km (15.4 mi) Pontal / Grumari circuit loop. After four laps of the Grumari sector (99.2 km of 241.5 km), the course returns east via the same coastal road to enter the 25.7 km (15.9 mi) Vista Chinesa Circuit loop at Gávea for three laps (77.1 km of 241.5) before finishing back at Fort Copacabana. Alejandro Valverde of Spain is favored to win gold, but he has Chris Froome, three-time winner of the Tour de France, to worry about.

Fencing

The Women’s Epee individual gold medal will be given out on Saturday, with Rossella Fiamingo of Italy the current favorite to take gold. Yana Shemyakina, the gold medalist from 2012, is also competing. Fiamingo won the last two world titles.

Judo

Two finals: The men’s 60 kilograms and the women’s 48 kilograms. Kim Won-Jin of South Korea and Yoldan Smetov of Kazakhstan, the world champion, are the favorites to win the competition. The gold medalist from 2012, Arsen Galstyan, isn’t competing. In the women’s field, Urantsetseg Munkhbat of Mongolia is the favorite to take gold. The 2012 champion, Sarah Menezes of Brazil, is also in the competition.

Shooting

Two finals: Men’s 10 metre air pistol and the women’s 10 metre air rifle. Jin Jong-Oh, a three-time gold medalist, is favored to bring in another gold for South Korea in the men’s competition. Yi Siling of China, the gold medalist from London, is favored to win the women’s competition.

Swimming

Four finals will be held on Saturday:

• Men’s 400 meters freestyle. Sun Yang of China won the gold in London, and is also the defending world champion, but Mack Horton of Australia is probably the favorite to win it
• Men’s 400 metre individual medley. Kosuke Hagino of Japan, a bronze medalist in London, is the favorite to win gold, with a potential 1-2 finish by the Japanese in this race
• Women’s 400 meter individual medley. Katinka Hosszu of Hungary has won this event three times in the world championships, but she still doesn’t have a gold medal. Hannah Miley of Great Britain and Maya DiRado of the United States will try to get in the way
• Women’s 4×100 metre freestyle relay. Australia are the big favorites to win it, with the Americans and the Dutch behind. They won this event in London, and also in the last world championship

Weightlifting

Women’s 48 kilograms is the only final of the day. Thai lifter Sopita Tanasan and Japanese Hiromi Miyake are among the favorites to win.
