2016 Olympics: Day 1 Gold Medals & Medal Table

Katinka Hosszu

The first day of gold medals being handed out belonged to Australia, with Mack Horton in the 400 meters freestyle and the Women’s 4×100 meters freestyle relay dominating in the pool, while Katinka Hosszu crushed the competition in the 400 meters individual medley, and Emese Szasz won the Women’s epee gold in Fencing.

Archery, Men’s Team: As expected, the South Korean team of Kim Woo-Jin, Ku Bon-Chan and Lee Seung-Yun took gold with a score of 2057, finishing ahead of the United States (silver, 2024) and Italy (bronze, 2007).

Cycling, Men’s individual road race: Greg Van Avermaet of Belgium beat Jakob Fuglsang of Denmark and Rafael Majka of Poland to take gold, winning the sprint on the Copacabana Beach. Chris Froome was only 1th.

Fencing, Women’s epee: Veteran Hungarian Emese Szasz stunned Rossella Fiamingo in the final to claim her first ever Olympic medal, and gold. Fiamingo took silver, and China’s Sun Yiwen finished with the bronze.

Judo

Women’s 48 kilograms: Paula Pareto of Argentina took gold after beating Jeong Bo-kyeong of South Korea in the final. Pareto took Bronze in Beijing, and is also the 2015 world champion in this event.

Men’s 60 kilograms: Russia’s Beslan Mudranov took the gold, his first Olympic medal, beating world champion Yeldos Smetov from Kazakhstan in the final.

Shooting

Virginia Thrasher

Women’s 10 meter air rifle: Virginia Thrasher of the United States was the first person to win gold in Rio, winning the event with a score of 208.0, a new Olympic record, finishing ahead of Dun Li and Yi Siling of China.

Men’s 10 meter air pistol: A two-time world champion, Hoang Xuan Vinh became the first Vietnamese to win a gold medal in any Olympic games, posting a 202.5, good enough for the Olympic record. He finished ahead of Felipe Almeida Wu of Brazil and Pang Wei of China.

Swimming

Kosuke Hagino

Men’s 400 meters individual medley: Kosuke Hagino of Japan lived up to expectations to take gold, improving on his bronze from London. He finished at a time of 4:06.05, slightly beating American Chase Kalisz, who took silver with 4:06.75. Daiya Seto of Japan took bronze with a 4:09.71.

Men’s 400 meters freestyle: Mack Horton took gold in a close race with Sun Yang. The 20-year old Australian swam a 3:41.55, narrowly beating Yang’s 3:41.68. Gabriele Detti of Italy took bronze, swimming a 3:43.49.

Women’s 400 meters individual medley: Katinka Hosszu of Hungary finally won an Olympic gold, smashing the world record with a 4:26.36. The closest swimmer to her was Maya DiRado of the United States at 4:31.15 for silver, followed by Mireia Belmonte of Spain to take bronze.

Women’s 4×100 meters freestyle relay: A wonderful race, but the expected result. Emma McKeon, Brittany Elmslie, Bronte Campbell and Cate Campbell set a new world record with a 3:30.65. The United States took silver with a 3:31.89, and Canada surprised with the bronze medal.

Weightlifting, women’s 48 kilograms: No surprise as Sopita Tanasan of Thailand took the gold medal, with a total of 200. Sri Wahyuni Agustiani of Indonesia took silver, Hiromi Miyake of Japan took bronze.
