Diving, men’s synchronized 10 meters platform: Chen Aisen and Lin Yue added another gold for the Chinese. For Lin it’s his second olympic gold. Their score of 496.98 beat the United States (457.11) and Great Britain (444.45), taking silver and bronze.
Fencing, women’s sabre: Yana Egorian of Russia won the gold medal, beating Sofia Velikaya in a Russian derby final, taking it 15-14. Bronze went to Olha Kharlan of Ukraine.
Gymnastics, men’s artistic team all-around: Japan scored 274.094 to win gold, leaving Russia with silver and China with bronze. Ryohei Kato, Kenzo Shirai, Yusuke Tanaka, Koji Yamamuro and Kohei Uchimura were part of the winning team.
Judo, men’s 73 kilograms: Shohei Ono of Japan brought back the country’s dominance in the sport with a win over Rustam Orujov of Azerbaijan in the final. Lasha Shavdatuashvili of Georgia took bronze, Dirk Van Tichelt of Belgium also got bronze.
Judo, women’s 57 kilograms: Rafaela Silva won the first gold medal of the olympics for the host nation, beating Dorjsurengiin Sumiyaa of Mongolia in the final, with the official helping her a lot in the end, which usually happens for host nations in close competition. Bronze went to Telma Monteiro of Portugal and Kaori Matsumoto of Japan.
Rugby Sevens, women’s tournament: Australia won the first ever Rugby 7’s tournament for women, beating New Zealand 24-17 in the final. Canada took bronze, beating Great Briatin in the match for the third medal.
Shooting, men’s 10 meters air rifle: Niccolo Campriani of Italy set a new Olympic record with 206.1, winning his second olympic gold and improving on silver in this event from London. Silver went to Serhiy Kulish of Ukraine, bronze to Vladimir Maslennikov of Russia.
Shooting, men’s trap: Gold went to Josip Glasnovic of Croatia, winning their first medal of the competition. Giovanni Pellielo of Italy took silver, Edward Ling of Great Britain took home bronze.
Swimming, men’s 200 meters freestyle: Sun Yang, with all of the doping allegations and past, took gold in this event for the first time, and his third Olympic gold overall, China’s fifth in the competition. Chad le Clos of South Africa got silver, Conor Dwyer of the United States took bronze.
Swimming, men’s 100 meters backstroke: The American dominance in this event continues, Ryan Murphy continuing the tradition with an olympic record of 51.97. Xu Jiayu of China took silver, David Plummer made it two of three for the USA with bronze.
Swimming, women’s 100 meters backstroke: Katinka Hosszu of Hungary wins her second gold in Rio with a time of 58.45, finishing ahead of Kathleen Baker (United States) with 58.75. Fu Yuanhui of China and Kylie Masse of Canada split bronze.
Swimming, women’s 100 meters breaststroke: Lilly King has been critical of Yulia Efimova being allowed to compete, and beat her in the pool with a new Olympic record of 1:04.93, another gold for the United States. Efimova took silver, and Katie Meili of the United States took bronze.
Weightlifting, men’s 62 kilograms: Oscar Figueroa of Colombia improves on his silver medal from London and takes Colombia’s first gold in Rio, with a total of 318. Eko Yuli Irawan of Indonesia got silver, Farkhad Kharki of Kazakhstan got bronze.
Weightlifting, women’s 58 kilograms: Sukanya Srisurat of Thailand won their second gold medal of the Olympics with a total of 240, a new Olympic record. Pimsiri Sirikaew of Thailand got silver, Kuo Hsing-Chun of Taiwan took bronze.
