Day 6 of the Rio Olympics was all about the United States, winning five gold medals, including three in the pool, with Michael Phelps winning the 200 meter IM, beating Ryan Lochte for the final time. Simone Biles lived up to three years of expectations by crushing the competition in the women’s all-around gymnastics final, with teammate Aly Raisman taking silver.
Archery, women’s individual: Chang Hye-jin of South Korea took gold, beating Lisa Unruh of Germany in the final. Bronze went to Ki Bo-bae, also of South Korea, unable to defend her individual title from London.
Canoeing, men’s slalom c-2: The Slovakian duo of Ladislav Skantar and Peter Skantar (Cousins) won the gold medal, their first ever in the Olympics, leaving the Great Britain pair with silver, and France with the bronze.
Canoeing, women’s slalom k-1: Maialen Chourraut of Spain took gold, improving on her bronze finish in London. Lukka Jones of New Zealand took silver, Jessica Fox of Australia took bronze. She finished 2nd in London in this event.
Cycling, men’s team sprint: Great Britain continues its dominance of this event, with the trio of Philip Hindes (second consecutive gold), Jason Kenny (third straight gold) and Callum Skinner (first) on the top of the podium. New Zealand finished with silver, France took bronze.
Fencing, women’s team epee: The Romanian trio of Simona Gherman, Simona Pop and Ana Maria Branza win the competition with the first Romanian gold in Rio. Silver went to China, bronze to Russia.
Gymnastics, women’s artistic individual all-around: As expected, Simone Biles crushed the competition, finishing more than two points ahead of United States teammate Aly Raisman to capture the 1-2 for the United States. Aliya Mustafina of Russia got bronze.
Judo, men’s 100 kilograms: Lukas Krpalek of the Czech Republic, the 2014 world champion, beat Elmar Gasimov of Azerbaijan in the final to take the gold medal. Cyrille Maret of France and Ryunosuke Haga of Japan got the bronze medals.
Judo, women’s 78 kilograms: American Kayla Harrison repeated as champion in this weight class, taking gold after beating Audrey Tcheumeo of France in the final. Bronze went to Mayra Aguiar of Brazil and Anamari Velensek of Slovenia.
Rowing, men’s coxless pair: The New Zealand duo of Hamish Bond and Eric Murray repeated as champions, finishing ahead of South Africa (silver) and Italy (bronze).
Rowing, men’s double sculls: The Sinkovic brothers, Martin and Valent of Croatia, took gold, finishing in front of Lithuania and Norway.
Rowing, men’s quadruple sculls: The German foursome of Philipp Wende, Lauritz Schoof, Karl Schulze and Hans Gruhne took the gold, which for three of them is a repeat of their triumph three years ago. Silver to Australia, bronze to Estonia.
Rowing, men’s lightweight coxless four: Mario Gyr, Simon Niepmann, Simon Schuerch and Lucas Tramer of Switzerland took the gold medal, the second for the Swiss in the Olympics. Denmark got silver, France got bronze.
Rowing, women’s double sculls: Magdalena Fularczyk-Kozłowska of Poland improved on her bronze finish from London along with partner Natalia Madaj, taking the gold over Great Britain (silver) and Lithuania (bronze).
Rowing, women’s quadruple sculls: Germany wins gold, which is a first for Julia Lier and Lisa Schmidla. Carina Bar has one silver medal from London, Annekatrin Thiele had one from Beijing and one from London before this gold. Silver to the Netherlands, bronze to Poland.
Rugby Sevens, men’s tournament: Fiji wins its first ever Olympic gold medal, destroying Great Britain 43-7 in the final. Bronze to South Africa in the inaugural Rugby tournament in the Olympics.
Shooting, women’s 50 meters rifle three positions: Barbara Engleder of Germany took the gold, beating Zhang Binbin and Du Li of China, leaving the two to split the Silver-Bronze.
Swimming, men’s 200 meters backstroke: Ryan Murphy of the United States won a close one with 1:53.62, taking gold over Mitch Larkin of Australia, 0.34 seconds behind him. Evgeny Rylov of Russia got bronze.
Swimming, men’s 200 meters IM: The Phelps-Lochte dual was a one man show, as Michael Phelps won his fourth gold of the Olympics and 22nd in his career, finishing two seconds ahead of Japan’s Kosuke Hagino, the 400 IM winner. Bronze went to Wang Shun of China.
Swimming, women’s 100 meters freestyle: A split gold medal between Simone Manuel, the first African-American swimmer to win an individual gold medal, and Penny Oleksiak of Canada, both swimming a 52.70. Sarah Sjostrom took bronze, her third medal of the Olympics, while Cate Campbell, the favorite, finished 6th.
Swimming, women’s 200 meters breaststroke: No Americans in the final, as Rie Kaneto of Japan wins her first gold with 2:20.30, beating Yuliya Yefimova of Russia (silver) and Shi Jinglin (bronze) of China.
Table Tennis, men’s singles: The all-Chinese final went to Ma Long, who won the team gold in 2012. Silver went Zhang Jike, the winner of this event in London. Bronze went to Jun Mizutani of Japan.
