With Athletics taking over centre stage, the night belonged to Usain Bolt with his third Olympic gold medal in 100 meters, the first one to ever do so, but perhaps Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa winning the 400 meters while breaking the world record is an even bigger achievement. Overall, the United States won two gold medals to remain on top of the medal table, while Great Britain got past China to second, winning five gold medals, including two by Gymnast Max Whitlock.
Athletics, men’s 100 meters: Usain Bolt of Jamaica ran a 9.81 to become the first man with three consecutive gold medals at the 100 meters. Justin Gatlin of the United States got silver off of his 9.89, and Canada’s Andre De Grasse took bronze, running a personal best of 9.91. Six of the eight runners ran below 10 seconds.
Athletics, men’s 400 meters: Maybe the most impressive feat of these Olympics, as South Africa’s Wayde van Niekerk, the world champion, shattered Michael Johnson’s world record, running a 43.03. Kirani James of Grenada, the winner from London, took silver with 43.76. Bronze to LaShawn Merritt of the United States, the gold medalist from Beijing, running a 43.85.
Athletics, women’s marathon: Jemima Sumgong of Kenya took the gold medal, running a 2:04.04, finishing ahead of Eunice Kirwa of Bahrain (Kenyan born) with silver, and Mare Dibaba of Ethiopia with bronze.
Athletics, women’s triple jump: Two-time World Champion and the silver medalist in London, Colombia’s Caterine Ibarguen took gold with a season-best of 15.17. Silver to Yulimar Rojas of Venezuela, bronze to Olga Rypakova of Kazakhstan, the gold medalist from London. The winner was the only one going past 15 meters.
Boxing, men’s light flyweight: Hasanboy Dusmatov of Uzbekistan beat Yberjen Martinez of Colombia to take the gold medal. Joahnys Argilagos of Cuba and Nico Hernandez of the United States got bronze.
Cycling, men’s sprint: The gold and silver went to Great Britain riders. Jason Kenny won his fifth Olympic gold and third in a row in this event, beating Callum Skinner in the final. Denis Dmitriev of Russia got bronze.
Diving, women’s 3 meter springboard: A China 1-2 as well, with gold to Shi Tingmao and silver to He Zi, who took silver in London as well in this event. Tania Cagnotto of Italy took bronze.
Fencing, men’s team epee: France, with the quarter of Gauthier Grumier (took bronze in the individual), Yannick Borel, Daniel Jerent and Jean-Michel Lucenay beat Italy in the final, while Hungary got the bronze.
Golf, men’s individual: Justin Rose of Great Britain, the 2013 US Open champion, won the gold medal. Henrik Stenson of Sweden got silver, Matt Kuchar of the United States got bronze.
Gymnastics, men’s floor: Max Whitlock took one of his two gold medals of the day, adding to his bronze from the all-around, finishing ahead of Brazilians Diego Hypolito (silver) and Arthur Mariano (bronze).
Gymnastics, men’s pommel horse: The British Whitlock took his second gold of the day, finishing ahead of Louis Smith (another Brit) who got silver. Bronze went to Alexander Naddour of the United States.
Gymnastics, women’s vault: Simone Biles of the United States added to her all-around gold medal, finishing ahead of silver medalist Maria Paseka of Russia. Giulia Steingruber of Switzerland got bronze.
Gymnastics, women’s uneven bars: Aliya Mustafina of Russia defended her title in this event from London. Silver to Madison Kocian of the United States, bronze to Sophie Scheder of Germany.
Sailing, men’s RS:X: Gold to the winner from four years ago, Dorian van Rijsselberghe. Silver to Nick Dempsey of the United States, bronze to Pierre Le Coq of France. This was the fourth gold for a Dutch athlete/team in these Olympics.
Sailing, women’s RS:X: Gold to Charline Picon of France. Silver to Chen Peina of China. Bronze to Stefania Elfutina of Russia.
Shooting, men’s 50 meters rifle 3 positions: Niccolo Campriani of Italy defended his gold medal from four years ago, beating Sergey Kamenskiy of Russia in the final. Alexis Raynaud of France got bronze.
Tennis, men’s singles: Andy Murray won his second gold medal, defending his London gold, beating Juan Martin Del Potro in the final. Bronze went to Kei Nishikori of Japan.
Tennis, women’s doubles: The Russian double of Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina, two-time Grand Slam champions, beat Timea Bacsinszky and Martina Hingis of Switzerland in the final. Czech Republic got bronze.
Tennis, mixed doubles: Gold to Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Jack Sock, winning in an All-American final against Venus Williams and Rajeev Ram. Bronze went to Czech Republic.
Weightlifting, women’s +75 kilograms: Meng Suping of China won the gold medal. Silver went to Kim Kuk-hyang of North Korea, bronze to Sarah Robles of the United States.
Wrestling, men’s greco-roman 59 kilograms: Ismael Borrero of Cuba destroyed Japan’s Shinobu Ota in the final. Elmurat Tasmuradov from Uzbekistan and Stig Andre Berge from Norway got bronze.
Wrestling, men’s greco-roman 75 kilograms: Roman Vlasov of Russia beat Mark Madsen of Denmark for the gold. Kim Hyeon-woo of South Korea and Saeid Abdevali of Iran took bronze.
