Mirco Bergamasco – Hero For a Day

It’s not very often that Italy beat France, or win a six nations match. Their last win came over Scotland just over a year ago as they finished another tournament with only one win. They have Scotland next week to finish the tournament and could end up with a rare 2 wins. Mirco Bergamasco, playing his club Rugby in France for Parisian club Racing Metro, scored five penalties and one conversion, including the winning penalty (75) to give Italy a historic 22-21 win over the French, losing their second consecutive match.

It was Italy’s second win over France and their first since joining the tournament. Leaving aside the England game, Italy have been impressive during this year’s tournament, blowing two wins against Ireland and Wales at home. This win over France and a possible follow up in Murrayfield next week could give the Italian a very big boost heading into the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. With Sergio Parisse, Mario Castogiovanni and perhaps, like today, some good kicking, the Italian might be a factor in six months time and maybe make it out of the group stage for the first time.
