No gold for the United States (2 silver, 4 bronze) or China (one silver), but Great Britain got another gold through Charlotte Dujardin in the individual dressage, while the moment of the evening was Shaunae Miller of the Bahamas leaping at the finish line to win the women’s 400 meters race, beating Allyson Felix of the USA by 0.07 seconds.

Men’s 800 meters: The second gold medal in the Olympics for Kenya (while Kenyan athletes have won for other nations), as David Rudisha repeats his title from London, running a 1:42.15. Taoufik Makhloufi of Algeria set a national record to take silver, Clayton Murphy of the United States took bronze.

Men’s pole vault: The second gold medal for Brazil in these games, as Thiago Braz da Silva stunned the crowd with a Olympic record of 6.03. The winner from London, France’s Renaud Lavillenie, took silver with 5.98. Sam Kendricks of the United States picked up bronze.

Women’s 400 meters: Allyson Felix finished second despite seemingly gaining on Shaunae Miller just before the finish line. The Bahamas sprinter, a silver medalist from last year world championships, dove to cross the finish line first at a time of 49.44, just ahead of Felix’s 49.51. Shericka Jackson of Jamaica took bronze.

Women’s 3000 meters steeplechase: Ruth Jebet, born in Kenya, ran for Bahrain and took gold while setting a new Asian record with 8:59.75. Hyvin Jepkemoi of Kenya took silver, Emma Coburn of the United States took bronze.

Women’s hammer throw: Two-time world champion and silver medalist in London, Anita Wlodarczyk of Poland won with a new world record of 82.29 meters. Zhang Wenxiu of China took silver, Sophie Hitchon of Great Britain took bronze.

Boxing, men’s heavyweight: Evgeny Tischchenko of Russia beat Vasily Levit of Kazakhstan to win the gold. Bronze went to Rustam Tulaganov of Uzbekistan and Erislandy Savon of Cuba.

Cycling, men’s omnium: Elia Viviani of Italy won the race to take gold. Silver to Mark Cavendish of Great Britain, bronze to the gold medalist from London, Denmark’s Lasse Norman Hansen.

Equestrian, Individual dressage: Charlotte Dujardin of Great Britain with gold, Isabell Werth of Germany with silver (10th Olympic medal) and Kristina Broring-Sprehe of Germany too with bronze.

Gymnastics, men’s vault: Ri Se-gwang of North Korea won gold, capitalizing on his dominance from the world championships. Denis Ablyazin of Russia took silver, Kenzo Shirai of Japan with bronze.

Gymnastics, men’s rings: Eleftherios Petrounias of Greece won their second gold medal of the Olympics. Arthur Zanetti of Brazil took silver, Denis Ablyazin of Russia got bronze.

Gymnastics, women’s balance beam: Sanne Wevers of the Netherlands took advantage of Simone Biles messing up her routine to take gold. Biles got bronze, Laurie Hernandez of the United States took silver.

Swimming, women’s 10 kilometers open water: Sharon van Rouwendall of the Netherlands took the gold medal, beating Rachele Bruni of Italy and Poliana Okimoto of Brazil.

Weightlifting, men’s 105 kilograms: Ruslan Nurudinov of Uzbekistan took the gold while setting a new clean & jerk olympic record. Simon Martirosyan of Armenia got silver, Aleksander Zaychikov of Kazakhstan got bronze.

Wrestling, men’s greco-roman 85 kilograms: Denis Chakvetadze of Russia won the gold, beating Zhan Beleniuk of Ukraine in the final. Bronze medals to Denis Kudla of Germany and Javid Hamzatau of Belarus.

Wrestling, men’s greco-roman 130 kilograms: Mijain Lopez of Cuba won his third gold medal (previous two at 120 kilos), beating Riza Kayaalp of Turkey in the final. Sabah Shariati of Azerbaijan and Sergey Semenov of Russia got bronze.
