While the Chicago Cubs made an easy day out of their doubleheader with the Milwukaee Brewers through sensational pitching and dazzling defense by Anthony Rizzo, the Los Angeles Dodgers and Chase Utley thrived in Philadelphia to take the NL West lead from the San Francisco Giants, and the Boston Red Sox beat the Baltimore Orioles with two Mookie Betts home runs, allowing the Toronto Blue Jays to take 1st in the AL East after a furious comeback rally against the New York Yankees.

Milwaukee Brewers 0  Chicago Cubs 4: Trevor Cahill along with the bullpen, including Aroldis Chapman with his 5th save for the team, combined for a 3-hitter shutout. Offense came from Addison Russell and even Cahill himself, although Anthony Rizzo climbing into the stands to get an out was the best play of the day, which happened in the second game of the doubleheader.

Milwaukee Brewers 1  Chicago Cubs 4: The Cubs were just as dominant in game no. 2 of the day, including a 7-strikeout performance by Jason Hammel, and Aroldis Chapman picking up his second save in a number of hours. Javier Barez hit a two-run homer.

Boston Red Sox 5  Baltimore Orioles 3: Big win for the BoSox to put themselves level with the Orioles, one game behind 1st in the AL East. Mookie Betts keeps knocking home runs, two this time, improving his bid to win the MVP in the AL. He got the lead with a two-run homer in the 8th, breaking a 3-3 tie.

Toronto Blue Jays 12  New York Yankees 6: The Yankees took a 6-0 lead into the 6th inning, but the Blue Jays scored four in the 6th (home runs by Troy Tulowitzki and Russell Martin). Martin hit another home run, and Edwin Encarnacion belted one too as part of an 8-run 8th inning to claim the top spot in the division.

Los Angeles Dodgers 15  Philadelphia Phillies 4: The Dodgers take first in the division as Chase Utley enjoyed the Philadelphia welcome so much he hit two home runs against his former team, including one grand slam. Howie Kendrick and Yasmani Grandal hit home runs as well.

Chicago White Sox 1  Cleveland Indians 3: Corey Kluber won his fourth in a row with 7 k’s in 6 innings, while the Indians opened a six-game lead on top of the AL Central. Francisco Lindor, Mike Napoli and Jason Kipins were in charge of driving in runs.

Kansas City Royals 6  Detroit Tigers 1: It’s probably all too little, too late for the World Series champions, but at least they’re ruining it for others. Danny Duffy improved to 10-1 this season, allowing only 3 hits in 7.2 innings. The Royals hit four home runs, including the first career homer for Raul Mondesi.

Minnesota Twins 4  Atlanta Braves 2: In the derby of the awful, the Twins stood out thanks to Ervin Santana shutting out the Braves in 7 innings of work, while Joe Mauer hit his 10th homer of the season and Trevor Plouffe hit the opening and closing RBIs of the game.

Miami Marlins 3  Cincinnati Reds 6: Not a loss the Marlins really need right now, giving up a grand slam home run to Gavin Barnhart, while Anthony DeSclafani did a good job with 6 k’s in 7 innings.

San Diego Padres 1  Tampa Bay Rays 15: Both Edwin Jackson and Carlos Villanueva got crushed, splitting the rough day. Blake Snell struck out 8 in five innings to pick up an easy win, as the Rays hit five home runs, including a couple by Brad Miller and no. 27 this season for Evan Longoria.

Oakland Athletics 4  Texas Rangers 5: An interesting finish to this game. Tied at 2-2, it goes to extra innings. The A’s scored two in the 10th, which is replied by a Carlos Beltran two-RBI single, followed by Rougned Odor getting hit by a pitch while the bases were loaded, ending the game.

St. Louis Cardinals 8  Houston Astros 5: Big day for the Cards which puts them back in one of the wild card slots. Tommy Pham and Jedd Gyorko hit home runs in the 5th and 6th to come from behind and grab the lead, getting sensational pitching from their bullpen.

Washington Nationals 2  Colorado Rockies 6: A two-run homer by D.J. LeMahieu erased an early Nationals lead, and the Rockies slowly moved away from the Nats while the bullpen did a good job of holding the NL East leaders away from home plate, going 1-for-9 with runners in scoring positions.

Seattle Mariners 6  Los Angeles Angels 7: The Angels stop their losing streak while slowing down the Mariners onslaught at the wild card spot, winning with a big 8th inning: Jefry Marte hitting a solo homer to tie the game, Cliff Pennington hitting an RBI triple to win it.

Pittsburgh Pirates 4  San Francisco Giants 3: The Pirates hand the Giants a 3rd consecutive loss, helping the NL West switch leaders. After a decent, but far from perfect start by Jameson Tallon, the bullpen took over with Antonio Bastardo getting the win, holding the Giants to just two hits in the final three innings and no runs. A Jung Ho-kang home run in the 8th won the game for Pittsburgh.
