The 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are over, with the United States, showcasing stars like Michael Phelps, Katie Ledecky, Simone Biles, their unbeatable basketball teams and many more on the track and other disciplines, once again leading the medal table with overall medals and gold.
The United States athletes won 46 gold medals and 121 overall. In swimming 16 gold medals were won, including five by Michael Phelps (three in relays, two individual) and four by Ledecky (three individual, one relay). They won 13 track gold medals, with Allyson Felix helping out to win both the 4×100 meters relay and the 4×400 relay, taking only silver in her individual 400 meters race. It was their most successful Olympics outside the United States, and third best overall in total medal count. Simone Biles finished with four gold medals; three individual, including the all-around, and the fourth as part of the team gold along with Aly Raisman, Gabby Douglas, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian.
Great Britain became the first nation to improve in their medal count in the Olympics following their hosting of it in 2012; They won 65 medals in total four years ago, finishing with 67 this time, finishing above China by one gold medal. As always, Cycling was a huge success with six gold medals, including three for Jason Kenny. Mo Farah won their two gold medals on the track with another 5000-10,000 double, Adam Peaty won the only gold medal in the pool with another dominant performance in breaststroke, while Jason Whitlock did incredibly well in the gymnastics arena, picking up two individual gold medals and bronze in the all-around.
The host nation, Brazil, finished 13th with 7 gold medals (their most ever) and 19 overall. Neymar led the football team to its first ever Olympic gold in the men’s tournament, and the men’s volleyball teams won both the indoor competition and the beach tournament. Brazil won their first gold in boxing, men’s football and pole vault, while Isaquias Queiroz became the first Brazilian with three medals in a single Olympics meet, getting two silvers and one bronze in canoeing.
Vietnam, Kosovo, Fiji, Singapore, Puerto Rico, Bahrain, Jordan, Tajikistan and Ivory Coast won their first Olympic gold medals, and for Kosovo’s, Fiji’s, and Jordan it was the first Olympic medal of any color.
