The Olympics are over, and Team USA won the gold medal, as expected, with a much easier final compared to the road to it. Memes, besides gold medals, were also awarded, especially to Harrison Barnes for his lack of contribution, and to Carmelo Anthony, who now has to go back and play for the New York Knicks.

Barnes was a player Mike Krzyzewski never planned on giving too many minutes. When he did play, you knew it was garbage time. As someone said: Barnes did nothing in the NBA finals, got a max contract. He did nothing in the Olympics, and won a gold medal. That’s one heck of a summer.

Anthony won his third Olympic gold medal, the first NBA basketball player to reach that achievement. Anthony cried after the game. It truly is something special, but it might be a bit more for him, considering his chances of reaching NBA greatness are slim. No MVP, and not a championship, certainly not with his Knicks, the so-called “Super Team”.

In 1992, it was the Dream Team. In 2008, it was the Redeem Team. Some call the 2016 version the “Meme Team”, which might be the thing it will be best remembered for. Maybe the guys simply parties too hard during the group stage, and only started taking the tournament series later on. In any case, this wasn’t an Olympic tournament that left a mark on USA basketball, in a good or bad way. Just getting the job done, and going back home for the league they care more about.
